Evolution of the Vertebrate Skull describes the evolution of the vertebrate cranium during transition from invertebrates to vertebrates from multidisciplinary perspectives (e.g., morphology, developmental biology, paleontology, genome biology). The prologue highlights the masterful work of Gavin de Beer as the historical foundation of the current synthesis on the evolutionary morphology of the skull. Study of the vertebrate head persistently reveals mysteries that still remain to be addressed and these problems are a focus of this volume. Recognition of such conundrum is important since the study of the vertebrate cranial evolution has such a long history from comparative osteology to the more recent developmental studies of vertebrate head segmentation. The editors aim to revive the vertebrate head problem through re-organizing the structure of issue and integrating current major streams of the fields such as regenerative medicine or functional genomics.

Takayuki Onai, PhD, is a lecturer at the University of Fukui, Japan. He specializes in vertebrate evolutionary developmental biology, with a particular focus on the evolution of the head mesoderm and neural crest in vertebrates, using model organisms such as amphioxus, lampreys, and hemichordates. His recent research explores the “Syntax Evolution Theory” (SET) and the “Genetic Polarization” hypothesis. Dr. Onai is also a Principal Investigator on a Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) grant, and his work has been published in journals such as Developmental Cell, EMBO Journal, and iScience among others. Noritaka Adachi, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the Iwate Medical University, Japan. He has expertise in comparative morphology and is particularly interested in the craniofacial musculoskeletal development and evolution in vertebrates. He has studied different species of embryos such as mouse, turtle, zebrafish, shark, skate, and lamprey.
