Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was an American writer and journalist and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. His hugely influential writings include the pamphlet Common Sense, which advocated the United States’ independence from Britain.

Claire Grogan is Professor of English at Bishop's University. She is the editor of the Broadview Editions of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey and Elizabeth Hamilton's Memoirs of Modern Philosophers.
