The book contains all essential fundamentals of high- and extra high voltage overhead lines and underground cables. Its main contents are as follows:

• Fundamentals and history of high-voltage AC and DC transmission

• Design and structure of power supply networks

• Introduction to network planning and operation

• Design of overhead lines and underground cable routes

• Approval procedures and environmental impact assessment for projects

• Characteristics of overhead lines and cables, grid calculation basics, various examples

• Overhead line components including tower foundations and conductor stringing

• Uprating and upgrading of overhead lines

• Cables for high-voltage direct current transmission (HVDC)

• Cable laying methods, partial undergrounding and monitoring

• Comparison of the technical properties of cables and overhead lines

• Comparison of the total costs of cables and overhead lines

• Future developments in power transmission

• Application of Artificial Intelligence in grid operation and -maintenance

Konstantin O. Papailiou studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig and earned his doctorate at ETH Zurich. He is Honorary Professor at the Technical University of Dresden in High-Voltage Overhead Lines and was Chief Executive Officer of the Pfisterer Group until 2011. From 2010 to 2016 he chaired the CIGRE Study Committee "Overhead Lines". Author of more than one hundred scientific papers and several books, including the Springer Handbook of Power Systems, he is presently President of CIGRE.

Herbert Lugschitz , electrical engineer, worked for 40 years at Austrian Power Grid specializing in extra-high-voltage lines and was engaged in the discourse on overhead lines and underground cables. He worked also in standardization, chaired the Technical Committee “Overhead Lines and Embedding of Power Cables” of the Austrian Electrotechnical Association OVE, and at CENELEC establishing the European Standard for overhead lines. He has been with CIGRE since the 1980ies, chaired Study Committee “Overhead Lines” for six years.

Markus Palic , after studying electrical energy technology, he worked for over 30 years in various positions in energy supply companies in the fields of energy management and grid construction, most recently as Chief Executive Officer of a regional grid company. At the same time, he was a lecturer in “Energy Economics in Liberalized Energy Markets” at the Aachen University of Applied Sciences, for many years. He has published more than 30 papers and two technical books on electrical engineering.

Guntram Schultz studied Electrical Power Engineering at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT (formerly University of Karlsruhe). He worked as planning engineer for several years in a Southern German power supply company. From 1981 on Professor at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (areas: Planning and developing of power grids, Renewable Energy) and Dean of the Faculty of Electrical and Information Technology. After retirement, Honorary Professor, lecturer and program coordinator for further education of young engineers.
