Celebrating 30 years, this second edition of the cutting-edge volume Judaism Since Gender charts feminist and gender theoretical interventions in Jewish Studies through almost thirty distinct essays. This volume offers a critique of Jewish Studies' masculinist and Enlightenment inheritances, arguing that the field's investment in objectivity and scientific detachment has continued to obscure the political stakes embedded in all knowledge production. Against this inheritance, the volume proposes a reconstituted Jewish Studies grounded in embodied feminist, queer, and trans theoretical frameworks that resist the marginalization implied by additive formulations such as a "feminist" or even a "gendered" Jewish Studies.

In two parts, this thoroughly updated collection offers a multi-vocal conversation organized around a central essay in part one, and six extended analytical studies in part two. This volume demonstrates how multiplicity, contention, and productive disagreement are hallmarks of feminist knowledge production. Through this communal and provisional approach, Judaism Since Gender presents new possibilities for imagining, producing, and distributing knowledge about Jews, Judaism, and Jewishness.

Miriam Peskowitz is the New York Times–bestselling author of The Daring Book for Girls (2007), and the titles Truth Behind the Mommy Wars (2005) and Code Like a Girl (2019), and she worked with LEGO on the publishing programme for LEGO Friends. At the time Judaism Since Gender was first published, she was an assistant and then associate professor of Religion at the University of Florida. She is the author of Spinning Fantasies: Rabbis, Gender and History (University of California Press, 1997). Her forthcoming book explores ancient queens and the ancient historians who wrote about them, and suggests that the complex multiculturalism of the Hellenistic world offers a better model for the West than Athens, Sparta, and Imperial Rome.

Laura Levitt is Professor Emerita of Religion, Jewish Studies, and Gender at Temple University. She is the author The Objects that Remain (2020); American Jewish Loss after the Holocaust (2007); and Jews and Feminism: The Ambivalent Search for Home (1997), and a co-editor of Impossible Images: Contemporary Art After the Holocaust (2003). Levitt is a founding editor of the North American Religions series at New York University Press, and, with Oren Stier, an editor of “Tending to Holocaust Objects,” a special issue of MAVCOR, the journal of Yale University’s Center for the Study of Material and Visual Cultures of Religion.
