This study investigates the function of preverbs in Megrelian – a Kartvelian language. Every language is capable of expressing spatial relations by using different linguistic means. Megrelian employs so-called preverbs in order to denote spatial relations such as directed movement or a location within space. Preverbs are specific prefixes attached to verbs. Megrelian possesses a remarkably large number of preverbs. This study presents a systematic survey of the structure and use of Megrelian preverbs, including a detailed description of the phonological processes occurring in combination with verbal roots and other morphemes. Aside from encoding spatial relations Megrelian preverbs fulfil other functions as well: they serve as a marker for the perfective aspect and – in some cases – denote the deictic relation between dialogue partners. The results from the conducted field work, the analysis of Megrelian texts and the discussion of the relevant literature form a central part of this study. Preverbs are not only found in Megrelian, but in other Kartvelian languages as well. Thus, this book takes into account the preverbs in Laz, Georgian and Svan, attempting to draw comparisons with Megrelian preverbs. The appendix includes detailed verbal paradigms, the list of Megrelian verbs that has served as the basis for this study, as well as the questionnaire that has been used to investigate the speaker's deixis.
