In recent years, the explosive rate at which artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are being introduced and adopted in personal and professional contexts has far outpaced research investigating their psychological implications for users. On the one hand, AI-enabled applications are being marketed as enhancements to human cognition and as positive contributors to productivity and efficiency. On the other hand, researchers have raised concerns against an indiscriminate adoption of AI technologies, and have argued that in order for AI to make a positive contribution to the human condition, it is crucial that AI development be aligned with human values.

One of the core challenges is to design AI-based applications to prevent harm, and foster human psychological well-being (PWB), which has two main conceptualizations. The view considers the presence of positive affect and absence of negative affect (i.e. feeling well and being satisfied with life) as a sign of PWB; the view focuses on those motivations, dispositions and activities which lead to flourishing or functioning well, whose presence can be evaluated by the extent to which one senses meaning, growth, positive relationships, excellence and autonomy in one’s life.

As developments in AI increasingly allow us to integrate them in various professional and personal activities, the nature and scope of this integration will potentially transform our attitudes towards, and experiences in these activities. Consequently, this will also affect the extent to which we can attain the aforementioned constituents of PWB. Whether AI-based technologies are designed, evaluated, and deployed with a view of PWB in mind will have profound cognitive and affective consequences on users and employees.

This book offers a multidisciplinary perspective on harnessing the potential of AI to enhance PWB.

Carsten Röcker is professor for Human-Technology Interaction at TH OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts and member of the board of directors of the Institute Industrial IT. Prior to these appointments, he held positions at Fraunhofer IOSB-INA, RWTH Aachen University, University of California San Diego, USA as well as Fraunhofer IPSI. During this time, he was guest researcher at the University of Science and Technology of China, the Queensland University of Technology, Australia, the Toyota Technological Institute, Japan, the Nara Institute of Science and Technology, Japan, the Medical University Graz, Austria, and the University of Tokyo, Japan. He regularly serves as a reviewer for national and international funding agencies, journals and international conferences. Prof. Röcker is author/editor of 8 books and over 190 journal and conference papers in the fields of intelligent systems, human-computer interaction and technology acceptance. He has an interdisciplinary background with academic degrees in the fields of Computer Science (PhD), Psychology (PhD), Social Science (PhD), Management (Master), Electrical Engineering (Master), Communication Science (Habilitation).

Hitesh Dhiman is a researcher and engineer specializing in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and intelligent assistance systems. With over ten years of experience in research and software development, his work explores how interactive technologies can be designed to support human motivation, basic psychological needs, learning, and well-being. His research combines the development of interactive systems with empirical methods to understand their effects on human experience and behavior. He has published at leading international HCI venues, including ACM CHI and PACM HCI, and contributed to interdisciplinary research projects and international collaborations.

Eileen Wemmer is a research associate in Human-Computer Interaction at Hasselt University and Flanders Make. She holds a B.Sc. in Mathematics and an M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Stuttgart, where she continued to work after graduation in cooperation with Fraunhofer IAO. Well-being, eudaimonia, artificial intelligence, and the context of work have remained central to her research. She is particularly interested in interdisciplinary topics with a strong psychological foundation and in designing technology that supports well-being. As technology continues to shape our everyday lives, she is driven by the question of how to best leverage the opportunities new innovations bring to improve our lives and well-being.
