Human factors affect performance in the workplace. Human actions that are intentional could result in situations compromising safety and security at the workplace, which need to be addressed. Human Reliability Program (HRP) is widely used in industries requiring high standards of safety and addresses these issues. This book presents perspectives of experts (India and USA) from diverse industries and R&D institutions, giving insights into implementing HRP.

The book is structured with an introductory chapter and divided into three sections (Fundamentals, Academic Perspectives, and Industrial Practices on HRP). The introductory chapter summarises the book's focus. Case studies and good practices adopted with respect to HRP are discussed in the individual chapters. The first section presents advances in HRP, the second section focuses on HRP in the nuclear industry, and the third section describes HRP or its equivalent in aviation, chemical, space, pharmaceutical, health care, and service sectors. How advances in cognitive science can aid in effective implementation of HRP are also discussed.

The book would fill the gap in scholarly inputs in the HRP domain, which are currently sparse. Professionals in industry and academicians will benefit from this book, in addition to being a resource for supplemental reading for students.

The book builds on the content published in the earlier edited volume on “Human Reliability Programs in Industries of National Importance” published by Springer.

Sai Baba is an accomplished researcher, scientific administrator, and institutional builder who has made significant contributions to the implementation of several high-impact activities for the Department of Atomic Energy. An Outstanding Scientist and former Director of the RMG, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR). He was a Senior Professor, Dean of Student Affairs, and coordinating Dean of HBNI at IGCAR. He served as the Registrar and Director of the Centre for Professional Development and Training of Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences. He is currently a Visiting Professor at NIAS. Carried out postdoctoral and collaborative work at Texas A&M University, College Station and the Research Centre, Julich, Germany. At NIAS, he is working in the domains of Science and Risk Communication, the HRP (focusing on understanding the Human Reliability issues across industries of national importance, a collaborative program with Texas A&M University), and "Capacity Building for handling nuclear and radiological materials" (collaborating with ORNL) to strengthen and expand training for the security agencies. Edited books, newsletters, and annual reports. Co-author of several publications in journals and symposiums and chapters in Books/Proceedings. Winner of several awards, including Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by Dr MGR University, Education and Research Institute, Chennai.

Sunil Chirayath is a Distinguished R&D staff member and group leader of the Nondestructive Measurement Science & Technology (NMST) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), USA. Prior to joining ORNL in 2024, Dr. Chirayath held positions from postdoctoral fellow to tenured full professor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at Texas A&M University, USA during 2007-2023, specializing in nuclear security and nonproliferation. He directed the Texas A&M Center for Nuclear Security Science and Policy Institute from 2015 to 2023. He also held scientific staff member positions at the Indian Atomic Energy Regulatory Board specializing in radiation safety, nuclear reactor physics, and nuclear fuel cycles. Dr. Chirayath received Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Physics in India from University of Madras and University of Calicut, respectively. Since 2024, he has been a Fellow of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM). Dr. Chirayath received the American Nuclear Society Leadership Award in 2026. He won the Texas A&M University Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award in 2023. INMM honored Dr. Chirayath with the Education and Outreach Award in 2021. Tokyo Institute of Technology (currently Institute of Science Tokyo) honored him with a special appointment of Associate Professor from 2019 to 2022.
