With the sixth edition of its Reiseanalyse Trend Study, the Forschungsgemeinschaft Urlaub und Reisen (FUR) has once again produced a seminal work. The study looks at trends in holiday demand in Germany from the 1970s to the travel year 2035, combining over 50 years of empirical data collection with a scientifically sound look into the future.
The Trend Study is based on the comprehensive historical database of Reiseanalyse (RA). This unique long-term data set makes it possible not only to understand the development of the travel market retrospectively, but also to view the future of holiday travel in Germany on an exceptionally stable basis. The combination of historical time series, current structures in the travel market, expected changes in the environment and the assessments of an experienced team of authors provides a precise and realistic picture of travel trends up to 2035.
Unlike the last trend study (RA Trend Study 2030, published in 2020), the time series forming the basis for the current Trend Study showed significant disruption due to the coronavirus pandemic. These were integrated into the analysis in such a way that the most recent data was taken into account while avoiding implausible distortions. The result shows that the enormous stability of German holiday demand was a decisive factor in overcoming the crisis, which threatened the existence of many tourism providers.
The current edition of the Trend Study identifies ten key developments that will shape both the conditions for travel and actual travel behaviour. They show which factors will remain stable in the long term and where significant changes are to be expected.
These findings provide a reliable basis for strategic decisions in business, politics and society.
