Through a comprehensive study on critical digital literacy in the University of California system, this research investigates how social media impacts students' mental and emotional health, what tools instructors of critical media literacy are using that work for students, and how instructors can better develop pedagogical strategies that prioritize well-being and critical media literacy together. By employing a mixed-methods approach, including a large survey across several campuses and detailed case studies, the findings revealed a variety of curricula, pedagogies, and perspectives on teaching and learning digital literacy. This book will discuss how a well-defined classroom could lead to positive views on social media along with the tools to take critical media literacy (CML) outside the classroom space, suggestions for systematic change in the UC system, and activities design with a student-centered learning approach that instructors can use to form curricula that center well-being and CML together with students.
