The Oxford Handbook of Christian Homiletics presents comprehensive scholarly essays that explore dimensions of Christian preaching understood as sophisticated public theology. Contributors craft insights from a panoply of methodological approaches, historical analyses of iconic preachers, and focal biblical-textual studies that address interpretive possibilities for homiletical praxis. In the first section, authors frame views of preaching through the lenses of hermeneutics, incarnational theology, performance studies, pneumatology, theopoetics, postcoloniality, affect theory, queer theory, trauma studies, aesthetics, and more. Terrains explored here include Asian American homiletics, Hispanic preaching in the United States, womanist preaching, preaching and indigeneity in Latin America, and preaching and the ecological crisis. In the second section are focused analyses of influential figures in the history of preaching, from John Chrysostom and Augustine to Hildegard of Bingen, Meister Eckhart, Martin Luther, Jonathan Edwards, Jarena Lee, Søren Kierkegaard, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Cecilio Arrastía, and Martin Luther King Jr. In the third section, contributors investigate themes of particular biblical books, foregrounding interpretive issues that are consequential for homiletical theory and praxis.

Über Autor(innen)

Carolyn J. Sharp teaches homiletics at Yale Divinity School. Among her books are commentaries on Micah (2025), Jeremiah 26-52 (2022), and Joshua (2019), and Irony and Meaning in the Hebrew Bible (2009). Sharp has edited or co-edited nine volumes, including Irony in the Bible (with Tobias Häner and Virginia Miller, 2023) and The Oxford Handbook of the Prophets (2016). Sharp serves as founding editor of the T&T Clark Library of Homiletics, convener of the Hermeneutics and Biblical Studies workgroup of the Academy of Homiletics, and co-chair of the Homiletics and Biblical Studies section of the Society of Biblical Literature.
