Dr. Girish Sahni (1956–2024) emerged from a middle-class background to become one of India’s most distinguished biochemists. He was associated with the CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) in Chandigarh from 1991 to 2015, where he served first as a scientist and later as Director (2005–2015). He subsequently became the 20th Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India.
Dr. Sahni was a pioneer in the development of India’s first indigenous clot-dissolving drug. He led the creation of natural streptokinase, followed by its recombinant and clot-specific variants. His groundbreaking work, along with that of his collaborators, made these life-saving treatments accessible and affordable to underserved populations.
This book offers an in-depth exploration of:
- The key milestones in Dr. Sahni’s personal and professional journey
- Reflections and insights from colleagues and peers who knew him
- His scientific innovations and leadership in administration
