Some states have violated international commitments not to develop nuclear weapons. Yet the effects of international sanctions or positive inducements on their internal politics remain highly contested. Etel Solingen is Chancellor's Professor in the Department of Political Science, University of California, Irvine and President-elect of the International Studies Association. Her most recent book Nuclear Logics: Contrasting Paths in East Asia and the Middle East (2007) was awarded the APSA's Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award and the Robert Jervis and Paul Schroeder Award for Best Book on International History and Politics. She is also author of Regional Orders at Century's Dawn: Global and Domestic Influences on Grand Strategy (1998), among other books.
