This book explores the double-edged power of artificial intelligence (AI) and provides readers with a clear and practical understanding of AI’s opportunities and risks. From saving lives in hospitals to reshaping economies, AI is transforming our world at lightning speed. However, with that power comes risks, job loss, misinformation, and even threats to security and human agency. People are asking: what can’t be replaced by AI? Drawing lessons from history, specifically the Great Depression, this book asks how do we guide AI responsibly before it outruns us and how can we navigate today’s fast-moving AI landscape? Blending real-world examples with a practical framework for governance, the authors offer readers, whether policymakers, professionals, or curious citizens, a clear path to understanding and shaping the future of AI as well as a guide to make thoughtful, informed decisions. Readers will learn to recognize both the positive potential of AI, such as new jobs and enhanced human abilities, and the dangers, including overreliance on machines, autonomous weapons, and AI-driven bioweapons. In addition, a comprehensive case study is included in every chapter that make abstract concepts understandable and applicable. Through detailed examination of topics from job displacement to existential risks, readers develop a nuanced understanding of different risk categories, their interconnections, and appropriate responses. This includes learning to distinguish between immediate practical concerns and longer-term systemic risks, enabling more sophisticated decision-making in uncertain environments. Above all, the book encourages readers to pause, reflect, and approach AI development wisely, helping them understand the broader societal impact and prepare for a future shaped by intelligent technology.
