The main objective of the book is to provide a thorough exposition of selected topics in the theory of social choice and welfare. The book is intended for graduate students of economics, politics, and philosophy, and researchers who may need an introduction to the area. While we do not intend this book to be an exhaustive survey of the theory of social choice and welfare economics, we plan to discuss a large number of important topics in the subject. We would discuss in detail the literature on the Arrow - type aggregation problem as well as the literature on strategic manipulation and implementation, these being two of the main areas in the theory of social choice. We shall also provide a comprehensive discussion of certain topics, such as the non - welfaristic issues of rights, freedom, and opportunity, for which no systematic textbook treatment is yet available. The book would include a discussion of several problems of measurement (e.g., monetary measures of individual welfare, national income and the standard of living, and the measurement of inequality and poverty), which constitute important aspects of applied welfare economics. The exposition of the book will be rigorous and will include the proofs of all the main results. At the same time, we would like to incorporate extended interpretative and intuitive discussions. Exercises and suggestions for further reading will be given at the end of each chapter.
