Volume 2: Decolonial and Intersectional Contestations

This edited book examines how coloniality and intersecting relations of race, gender, caste, class, sexuality, ability and migration continue to organise work, workers and workplaces. Complementing Volume 1 on enacting alternatives, this volume focuses on the structures that make such reimagining necessary. Organised in four parts, the collection analyses colonial legacies and labour extraction; migration, borders and the regulation of labour; embodied labour and gendered contestations; and technology, language and the futures of work. Its chapters analyse post-Soviet labour in Estonia, extractivism in the DRC, women’s informal work in Ghana, Adivasi media in India, migrant agricultural labour in Portugal, German immigration regimes, international doctoral students in the UK, home-based work, gender inclusive policies and multiple jobholding in India, gender transitioning in Swiss workplaces, AI and worker surveillance in the Global South, and Brazilian linguistic inequality.
Bringing sociology of work into dialogue with postcolonial, decolonial, queer, migration, and organization and management studies, this volume shows how labour is governed through extraction, surveillance and embodied norms, while foregrounding epistemic compassion, Indigenous media sovereignty, decolonial multilingualism, and temporal sovereignty.
