What makes migrant workers in Europe irregular, and what is their experience like day to day?
This book traces how immigration regimes, labour markets, welfare systems and public narratives combine to produce precarious, insecure working lives across contemporary Europe.
Drawing on the Horizon Europe and UKRI-funded I-CLAIM projects, the volume covers Finland, Germany, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands and the UK, introducing the concept of "irregularity assemblage" to capture how irregular migration is produced through overlapping layers of policy, narratives and practices.
Combining policy analysis, survey experiments, analysis of public narratives and ethnographic fieldwork in agriculture, domestic work, and food delivery, the authors cast new light on the living and working condition of irregularised migrant workers in Europe.
