Dresden, Meissen or a forgery? – Stoneware by Johann Friedrich Böttger, the inventor of European porcelain
The new standard work on J. F. Böttger sheds a completely new light on the work of the founder of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory. The stylistic development, from the initial European invention to the mass production of cabinet pieces in red stoneware, is traced in a vivid and memorable manner.
Johann Friedrich Böttger (1682–1719) was a true pioneer. He was a pharmacist, alchemist and businessman. His works not only bear witness to exceptional craftsmanship, but – alongside the porcelain he later invented – represent a novelty on the European continent: stoneware in its most modern artistic form. Over the course of decades, the author and expert Angela Gräfin von Wallwitz has compiled knowledge and material to distinguish between Böttger stoneware from Dresden and Meissen, which is now published in this volume alongside works from the Doris and Stanford Marks Collection.
