This book explains the logic of China’s multi-tier urbanization through a case study of Zhejiang Province. It shows how markets, government, and social participation interact across towns, county-level cities, prefecture-level cities, and metropolitan clusters. Chapters 1–4 trace the development of Longgang, Yiwu, Taizhou, and Hangzhou. Chapter 5 examines market evolution, social development, and urbanization. Chapters 6–7 develop a state–market–society framework and explain the interaction of capital and power. Chapter 8 considers a shift from efficiency-led expansion toward a better balance of equity and efficiency. Drawing on sociology, economic history, economics, and public administration, the book argues that population concentration is the visible form of urbanization, while modern markets provide its initial momentum. It concludes that sustainable development depends on clearly defined roles and effective coordination among economic, political, and social systems, offering an institutional perspective on urban development and social integration.
