This book provides an engineering-led guide to fluoride and oxyfluoride glasses as photonic materials, explaining how to translate glass chemistry into reliable mid-infrared (mid-IR) fibres, components, and laser/amplifier systems. The main topics include: (i) foundations that distinguish fluoride hosts—low phonon energy, broad IR transparency, and favourable rare-earth spectroscopy; (ii) structure–property relationships and a quantitative framework for intrinsic and extrinsic optical loss (electronic/multiphonon edges, Rayleigh scattering, OH/hydration bands, transition-metal contamination, inclusions, and devitrification); (iii) manufacturing practice—raw-material selection, dehydration and fluorination routes, melt handling, contamination control, shaping, and fibre drawing; (iv) coverage of key glass families (e.g., fluorozirconates, fluoroindates, fluoroaluminates, and oxyfluorides) with clear selection logic; (v) rare-earth activators and spectroscopy, linking measured parameters (cross-sections, lifetimes, energy transfer, quenching, ESA) to device design; and (vi) critical fluoride-fibre devices such as FBGs, pump combiners, couplers, splices/tapers, endcaps, packaging, and reliability qualification. It is intended for graduate students, researchers, and professionals in optics, optical materials, optical engineering and related fields.
