This volume which centers on a series of case studies, offers insights into the sociolinguistic workings of a diverse group of endangered languages from across Europe to provide a platform for comparative scholarship. The key question addressed by the contributors to the volume is: Is Europe special when it comes to endangerment, given that across the continent there is a long tradition of nation states, national languages and long-standing literacy? The edited volume addresses the states of endangerment of European languages organized according to three overarching themes which serve to unite the volume: agents, beliefs and domains.
