This open access book establishes feedback as a central organising principle for design and development, offering a new perspective on how individuals and organisations can navigate uncertainty while creating innovative solutions. Designers seek feedback from stakeholders, teams rely on feedback to coordinate their work, managers use feedback to guide projects, and digital technologies increasingly generate feedback across product lifecycles. Yet despite its importance, feedback is often treated as a supporting mechanism rather than a driving principle. This book argues that deliberately attending to feedback can help to create better designs and improve development performance.

The discussion spans design practice, design management, systems engineering, organisational capability and lifecycle digitalisation. It addresses design and development across disciplines using a system-theoretic lens. David C. Wynn has been researching the design and development process since 2002. After completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Oxford and PhD in Engineering at the University of Cambridge, he worked as a researcher at Cambridge Engineering Design Centre and was elected a Fellow of Homerton College. David then joined Bombardier Aerospace in Montreal, Canada where he worked in the Product Development Engineering group, also holding adjunct appointments at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at McGill University and the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering at the University of Prince Edward Island. After some time in industry, he returned to full-time academia at the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. David then moved to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia where he is an Associate Professor at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals.
