Modern Missile Guidance, Third Edition presents a rigorous survey of missile guidance, addressing not only missile-specific challenges but also broader problems in the guidance of unmanned vehicles. It explores the evolution of guidance systems, from traditional proportional navigation to advanced guidance laws based on the Lyapunov and Lyapunov-Bellman approaches.

The new edition includes a chapter dedicated to the unique challenges of hypersonic missile guidance, including extreme heat management, aerodynamics, and computational delays. It analyzes the influence of these delays on guidance accuracy and presents innovative solutions to mitigate their effects. It also considers obstacle avoidance algorithms and their application to unmanned vehicles.

This book is intended for aerospace industry researchers and practicing engineers working in missile guidance system design and air defense systems.

Rafael Yanushevsky, CEO of Research & Technology Consulting, USA, received a BS degree in mathematics and an MS degree, with honors, in electromechanical engineering from Kiev University, Ukraine, and the Kiev Polytechnic Institute, Ukraine, respectively. He earned his PhD in optimization of multivariable systems in 1968 from the Institute of Control Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia. After immigrating to the United States in December 1987, Dr. Yanushevsky started teaching at the University of Maryland, first in the Department of Electrical Engineering, then in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He also taught at the University of the District of Columbia in the Department of Mathematics. Since 1999, he has been involved in projects related to the aerospace industry. He received a letter of appreciation from the Department of the Navy, the Navy Area Theater Ballistic Missile Program, in 2002. He has published over 90 papers and six books, including Guidance of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Second Edition (2026, CRC Press) and Modern Missile Guidance, Second Edition (2019, CRC Press).
