This introductory textbook presents the fundamentals of computing with words, a concept rooted in fuzzy logic that provides greater flexibility in automation technology, control engineering, logistics, and electrical engineering. It is designed for readers who are not only interested in understanding the potential of this promising technology but also in exploring its practical implementation.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary, this translated, renewed and prolonged edition has been expanded to include an introduction to fuzzy design science research (chapter 1) and computing with words (chapter 11).

Prof. Dr. Sc. inf. Edy Portmann is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, co-director of the Human-IST Institute, and president of the FMsquare Foundation. His research focuses on computing with words and perceptions. After completing an apprenticeship as an electronics technician, he studied business informatics and earned a doctorate in fuzzy systems. He has worked for Swisscom, PwC, and EY, among others. Additionally, he has been a researcher at the universities of Singapore, Berkeley, and Bern.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Hans-Heinrich Bothe was an expert in analog and digital electronics, neuromorphic electronics, and nonlinear signal processing. His work focused on circuit design, digital signal processing, nonlinear systems, and the development of electronic aids for individuals with disabilities, particularly communication tools for those with hearing or visual impairments. Prof. Bothe also served as the Research and International Relations Officer (FiB) in the Department of Electrical Engineering. His contributions to both academia and practical applications have left a lasting impact.
