Dirk Renswoude is a craftsman and loner of noble birth who has been mistreated by his family. He meets Thierry, a young scholar on his way to study at the university at Basle and they soon discover that they share a fascination with the black arts. Thierry is initially cautious and afraid of blasphemy, whilst Dirk is ambitious and thirsts for power. Marjorie Bowen (1885-1952) is a pseudonym of Margaret Gabrielle Vere Long, a British author who wrote supernatural horror stories, historical romances, popular history and biography. Her books are much sought after by aficionados of gothic horror and received praise from critics, as she was considered one of the great supernatural writers of the century. She also wrote under the names Joseph Shearing, George R. Preedy, John Winch, Robert Paye and Margaret Campbell.
