David Cole served in the army and police for thirty-five years, attaining the rank of detective chief superintendent. For the last ten years of his service he commanded a large criminal investigation department in the Midlands, during which time he led investigations into all types of serious crime including terrorism, homocide, rape and armed robbery. His inquiry into the activities of Geoffrey Prime was described as 'masterly and remarkably diligent' by the Attorney General at the Old Bailey trial. He was awarded the Queen's Police Medal for Distinguished Service and retired in 1990.
