Supplying an overview of virtualization, cloud computing, and cloud vendors, this book details the considerations for designing and running highly available services. It starts from the basic premise that a service is comprised of products, processes, and people (3Ps). Providing a detailed look at availability, redundancy, and fault tolerance, the book covers high availability architectures: RAS, clusters, grids and RAID storage. It covers major vendors of hardware, including fault tolerance, cluster offerings, and emergent Linux clusters, as well as online transaction processing (OLTP) and relational databases.

Dr. Terry Critchley is a retired IT consultant living near Manchester in the UK. Terry studied Physics at Manchester University (using some of Rutherford's original equipment!) and gained an Honours degree in Physics, followed five years later with a Ph D in Nuclear Physics. He then joined IBM as a Systems Engineer and spent 24 years there in a variety of accounts and specialisations, latterly joining Oracle for 3 years. Terry joined his last company, Sun Microsystems in 1996 and left there in 2001, after planning and running the Sun European Y2000 education, and then spent a year at a major UK bank.

In 1993 he initiated and co-authored a book on Open Systems for the British Computer Society ('Open Systems: The Reality' ISBN 0-13-030735-1) and has recently written this book on 'IT Services High Availability'. He is also 'mining' tons of his old material for his next book, probably on 'Service Performance and Management'.
