Brittany was a ten-year-old girl who lived with her mother in a small house up in the mountains. She was born and raised in the house where she lived since her father disappeared many years before. Brittany was a lonely little girl. She had no friends, and she had never seen any other kids near her home. She didn’t even know if any other kids even existed. She spent most of her days playing down by the river. She always wondered why there were no other kids around. Her mother told her all the other kids lived far away or they lived in the king’s castle behind the great wall. She made it clear that most of the kids were killed by the king because he feared for his crown. There were rumors that the Stephens family held the crown many years ago. She didn’t remember the exact year because it was many seasons before she was born. There were stories that were told to her as a little girl, and it was told to her mother and her mother before her. She told Brittany she thought the king was a Stephens by blood, but she was not sure. There was nothing written in the decree, and there were no witnesses.
“For some reason, he promised to leave us alone,” her mother said. “He sent your father on a trip, and he has never returned, but we will continue to wait until he returns home.”
“I will wait with you, Mom,” Brittany said.
“I just miss him so much,” her mother said.
“I pray for him every day but I never get an answer, but I won’t give up. I will continue to pray for Dad’s safe return.”
“Please finish your breakfast and go outside and play. Try to get plenty of sun,” her mother said with tears in her eyes.
Brittany got up from the table, hugged her mom and whispered in her ear, “Everything will be all right because I can feel a change is coming. I’m going down to the river to play.” She walked out the door and ran in the woods. She was a skinny little girl, but she had a lot of energy, and she loved to run. Whenever she ran, she never got tired very quickly. She wanted to grow up to be a warrior to fight against the king’s rule, but she never told her mother. She knew her mother would rule against such talk because it was dangerous to think that way. If the king ever got word that Brittany was thinking that way he would surely have her killed.
Brittany was playing near her home down by the Glasgow River. While digging in the dirt, she found a strange metallic box with a pendant in it on a chain buried in the ground near a large oak tree. It was in a strange looking metal box. She wiped off the dirt, walked over to the river and rinsed off the box. She struggled to open the container, and the pendant was covered in muck. She rinsed off the pendant, and she was expecting it to shine, but it was a dull rusty color. She didn’t care. Brittany wanted to keep it. She slid the pendant leather strap over her head and around her neck. She tucked it inside of her shirt close to her body, and it began to glow. It produced a bright light and sent a tingling sensation throughout her body. She started to get dizzy and fell to the ground fast asleep. While sleeping, she began dreaming and wished for a friend and a protector for her and her mother. She was always afraid of the king and his soldiers. Unknowns to her, she had just sent for a guardian from a mysterious other realm. She was born into a royal family bloodline, but she was living as a poor commoner among the other peasants in the kingdom.
She was a lost princess from hundreds of years ago. When she fell asleep she made a wish and transported her thirty-sixth generation great-grandson from across the galaxy and future timeline from the year 2080 back to the year 992 AD as she slumbered. She finally awakened; it was night and dark. She quickly jumped to her feet, brushed herself off and ran home as fast as she could staggering along the way. She ran fast knowing her mother would be worried about her. She finally arrived home as she exited the forest and quickly ran toward the house and entered as her mom sat angrily at the kitchen table.
Her mother yelled at her then asked her where she had been. “You know you are supposed to be home before dark. You know it is dangerous out there at night. Hurry and eat your dinner then go to bed.” She smiled at Brittany. Her protector had materialized in a nearby dark cave dazed and confused. He fumbled around in the dark until he found some rubbish. He reached into his pocket and found an igniter to start a fire. The fire began to brighten up the room as he turned and noticed all the glyphic on the cave wall. He looked around the cave confused trying to figure out where he was and he found some clothes and high-tech weapons in the corner, but he didn’t put them on. There were two titanium swords with razor-sharp edges. A fancy blade that he picked up and played with as it made a weird sound as it cut through the air.
He threw it, and it came back to him. He caught it in his hand, smiled and threw it again, and it returned again. His shoulders were itching ferociously and his surroundings were unfamiliar as he looked around the cave. He wondered what year it was as he looked at the clothing that awaited him. He didn’t understand how he was able to read the language and the glyphs on the wall in the cave. The language was foreign to him but as he continued to read it the language became clear. It was of a Scottish dialect. He picked up the ion laser blaster, which he was familiar with because it was from his time. There was also a force field protector. He decided to wait before changing clothes, but he attached the weapons to his body and continued reading the history on the wall. It became clear that he was there to protect someone by the name of princess Brittany Stephens. His name was Jasper Stevens, but it was spelled differently. He pronounced her name aloud, and his back and shoulders went into severe spasm and started glowing causing him to fall to one knee.
He screamed out in agonizing pain. He could feel a heavy weight as if someone was pushing down on his shoulders. He reached behind himself, and he could feel the massive wings. He was amazed and confused at the same time. He wasn’t afraid as he flapped them and lifted himself off the floor of the cave. He knew everything he did could be controlled with a single thought. He was a fast learner because he was from the future. With a single thought, the mighty white wings retracted back into the crease of his shoulders and disappeared. Jasper dropped to the ground on one knee feeling dizzy again. He looked up, and there was a glowing message on the cave wall instructing him on the protection of the princess at all cost because if she or her mother was killed the timeline would change and then the great-grandson would never be born. He still didn’t know who she was or where she could be found. He picked up the remainder of his stuff and put it on as he thought about the single thought that caused the wings to retract between his shoulder blades and conceal them as if they never existed.
The instruction clearly stated that once the task was completed and the princess was safe, he would be transported back home to his own timeline. He stayed in the cave and started training himself on the usage of all the weapons he possessed so he could complete the job task and return home.
He didn’t know what the princess looked like, but he knew her name. There was another problem; she was probably of white descendent, and he was black and from the past. Blacks had no status back in that timeline, and he knew that would be a problem. They were all considered poor commoners or slaves with no status and especially him. The next morning, he decided to go for a walk down near the river. He heard a child screaming in fear; he slowly walked toward the sound. He heard some men talking and laughing as they threw a woman to the ground. Another man held the little girl back as they tried to remove her mother’s dress. She strenuously struggled with the men.
“These Stephens clan women are really feisty and think they are better than the rest of us,” one man said.
“You have no husband to protect you, and the both of you live alone in your sweet little house out here all alone and in the middle of nowhere.”
The little girl screamed for her mother.
“Brittany, please stay over there,” her mother said. After hearing her name, Jasper could feel an eerie sensation traveling throughout his body. He now knew this was the little girl, Brittany Stephens, and her mother he was sent back in time to protect.
He slowly walked from the forest and stood in the middle of the yard. The men stopped and stared at him. “Who are you and what do you want?” one man asked.
“Move along moor. These matters don’t concern you,” another man said.
“It does if you go around attacking women and little girls,” Jasper told them.
“These Stephens women are commoners, and we work for the king. We have the right to do what we want with them. We are here to collect taxes in the name of the king.”
“I’m sure the king doesn’t want you attacking and beating women and little girls. They don’t have any money so how can they pay you?” Jasper asked. “You need to take them to the king and let him decide what to do with them. I can’t allow you to harm them. Now release the girl. She is only a...
