This book explores hydrostatic pressure chemistry and its applications in smart/functional molecular, supramolecular, and biological systems. Hydrostatic pressure is a fundamental and widespread stimulus that uniquely influences various biological, chemical, and physical phenomena. Recently, the scientific community has shown considerable interest in controlling reactions and rates through hydrostatic pressure. This volume provides a comprehensive historical overview of hydrostatic pressure studies, from early research topics to contemporary mechanochemistry and mechanobiology. It is aimed at both theoretical and experimental chemists specializing in supramolecular and (bio)macromolecular chemistry, mechanoscience, material science, and engineering. Readers will gain a thorough understanding of the longstanding mysteries within mechanoscience and related fields.

Tomoyuki Hamachi received his Ph.D. degree from Kyushu University (Japan) in 2025. During the Ph.D. course, he joined Prof. Michael R. Wasielewski’s lab at Northwestern University (USA). Then, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the same laboratory. In 2025, he started his academic career as an assistant professor at Kyushu University. His research interests include photochemistry, spin chemistry, and supramolecular chemistry.

Gaku Fukuhara received his Ph.D. degree from Osaka University (Japan) in 2007. During the Ph.D. course, he joined Prof. Lyle Isaacs’s lab at University of Maryland (USA) and Prof. Frank-Gerrit Klärner’s lab at University of Duisburg-Essen (Germany). Then, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher with Prof. Timothy Swager at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA). In 2008, he started his academic career as an assistant professor at Osaka University (Japan) and then moved to Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan) as an associate professor in 2017. Now, he became a full professor at Kyushu University (Japan) in 2025. His research interests include supramolecular chemistry, cancer sensing/imaging, organic photochemistry and high pressure chemistry.
