This textbook provides students with the theory and practical steps for implementing sustainability practices in tourism and hospitality businesses, including how to measure, monitor and report on sustainability initiatives. Sustainable Tourism and Hospitality Management is a practical guide for postgraduate students to understand how travel businesses engage and need to comply with sustainable business practices. As regulations and certifications continue to unfold for emissions reporting, environmental, social and governance (ESG) accountability in line with global benchmarks such as the UN's Sustainable Development Goals will become increasingly essential. This book looks at viable ways travel businesses can implement more sustainable practices such as by reducing waste impact, using local produce, prioritizing social inclusion and avoiding greenwashing. It provides an overview of the organizations driving change as well as the current global certifications for sustainability benchmarking, all grounded in real-world examples demonstrating best practices and challenges unique to the travel industry. This includes insights and applications from major industry players such as Hilton, IHG and Hyatt, as well as key organizations such as UN Tourism and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. In-text learning features such as learning outcomes, best practice tips from industry leaders and reflective questions help students apply sustainability theory to practice. It is supported by online resources of PowerPoint slides and additional reflective questions and real-world examples. Sustainable Tourism and Hospitality Management is ideal for postgraduate students taking modules on Sustainable Tourism Management and Development and will prepare students to apply these sustainability principles in their future tourism and hospitality careers.
