As Time Goes By
By Victoria Jackson
Chapter One: Crash In a small town in northern Canada, there was a normal teenage boy. Ross was no one special. Pale skin, and black hair. His side swept bangs almost hiding his green eyes. He was 5.6, with a small slim body that enabled him to hide in small places when his parents were arguing. He slowly walked from his school now, holding his favorite book in his hands. Twilight. He’d gone through the four books of the series around five times but still didn’t desire to move on to different books. He loved this series in particular. Sadly only young girls in their pre-teens understood him. He was made the laughing stock of his high school constantly. Ross didn’t notice a group of male teens he’d just walked by.
“There’s word going around that 'Twilight boys' parents are getting divorced.” One of them pointed it out. Ross didn’t look up from his book. If I listen to their cruel jokes, I am done for. He thought to himself. The guys laughed and didn’t stop staring in Ross’s direction. “Well, is it true dork?” The same guy asked, followed by the snickers of his friends. Ross picked up his walking pace, muttering under his breath. After a few minutes he found the short cut through the small woods on the outskirts of town. If he walked there to get to his parents house, he’d be there quicker. He still kept his eyes on his book, only looking up every couple of seconds. Ross enjoyed reading the first few chapters of the first book. Every time it felt like reading for the first time over again. Suddenly his IPhone interrupted him. He stuffed his book in his school bag quickly, and grabbed his phone out of his pocket. It was his uncle Joe.
“Joe?” Ross answered. His uncle almost never called, unless it was something important.
“Hi there kiddo.” His uncle tried to sound positive. Ross could still sense something was wrong. He worried about how bad it just might be. Another fight.
“What’s wrong?” He asked getting straight to the point. He waited for the answer, hearing his uncle let out a big sigh. He frowned. This was bad.
“Your parents had another fight…” Joe trailed off. Ross was correct. He shook his head, and tried to find his words.
“Someone got hurt….” It wasn't a question. His uncle answered this remark right away.
“No. No one got hurt.” Joe assured him. “They did yell loud enough for the neighbors to hear though. They hate seeing you get caught in the middle buddy.” Joe spoke with empathy. Ross took a deep breath. If they really didn't want me caught in the middle they would stop fighting altogether.
“So why did you call then? To tell me how sorry they are, because I get pretty damn tired of hearing that.” Ross said bitterly. Joe sighed once again.
“They want you to stay at my place tonight, so they can try to work things out a bit.” Ross nodded his head, although his uncle couldn’t see it. They'll never work it out. Joe waited for him to say something, Awkwardly.
“You remember how to get to my place?” Joe asked. Ross took a breath.
“Yes. I remember. Just another neighborhood past my parents place and I’m there at the house with the red door.” He recited. I might as well just move there.
“Good. I’ll see you in just a bit.” Joe said. Ross didn’t bother to say goodbye. He just hung up, and then stared into the distance. He looked at his surroundings now. He had reached an opening in the woods, where a pair of guys he knew from school were hanging out. He approached them slowly. Ross recognized the two boys. Wylie, and Stanly. The only two people who didn’t think he was a dork. Only because of course, they had been labeled as dorks too by their classmates.
“What are you guys doing out here?” Ross joined them. Wylie looked at his buddy with a smirk on his face. He focused his eyes on the opening on the other side of the woods, where Ross was now facing. Stanly smiled too, taking a sip of his cola.
“We’re waiting for the Alphas to come out.” Wylie said proudly. Ross looked at him strangely. He raised his eyebrow waiting for his friend to explain. Wyllie, and Stanly were shocked to see their friend so oblivious. What am I missing here?
“You don’t know who they are? The Alphas are the strangest people in this whole town. All of them are home schooled, hardly ever showing themselves in public.” Wylie explained. Ross scoffed and shook his head. That's not too strange.
“That’s not out of the ordinary. They probably just like to keep to themselves.” He dismissed. Stanly let out a laugh.
“Tell that to my grandma.” He looked Ross in the eyes. “She told me when she was a teenager back in the 50’s she saw a family at a dance party that looked identical to the Alphas we see now. Who knows who they really are? They could be time travellers for all we know.” He added. Ross was taken aback by this information. Stanly and Wylie never lie to me, but this could be a silly prank.
“Well still, why would they be in this forest?” Ross asked. “There are many rumors about the Alpha family. One in particular, is where they live. People say they have a house deeper in this forest then anybody ever goes. They say you can get there by taking the path on the right when you reach the end of this road. The neighborhood you live in is on the left path isn’t it?” Wylie asked. Ross nodded. His two only friends weren’t dumb people. They usually never believed superstitions. Accept this story about this strange family. Why hasn't the myth of this family been mentioned to me before?
“Why would they show up from their home today?” Ross asked, looking at both of his friends. He wasn’t sure just much they could possibly know about these people they seemed to be to fascinated with.
“There was the sound of a gunshot earlier today. We heard it.” Stanly told him. Wylie looked around searching.
“Another rumor; one that is less believable then others; is that they show up whenever there is a crime scene around this area.” He took another sip of cola.
“That is crazy!” Ross pushed his shoulder. “If you guys heard a gun you should have left, not stayed to see if the so called ‘Alphas’ came out of hiding.” He looked at his friends with a concerned expression. They have lost their sanity.
“We said we heard something like a gunshot. Not that we know if it really was one or not.” Stanly dismissed him. “Besides we’re beyond curious at if they really-“ He stopped talking all of a sudden. Ross shook his shoulder to see if he was okay. Stanly stared off in a single direction. Wylie, and Ross soon looked over to see why their friend had stopped talking. There they all were. The Alpha family had come for a visit. Ross couldn’t believe his eyes. They're real. Out of the trees came the first pair. A slim man with straight ginger hair peered out. He had green eyes, and a bit of freckles on his cheeks. Beside him stood a tall, slim, gorgeous blonde. Her lips were tainted with red lipstick, just like her red nails. She had blue eyes someone could spot from a distance. They moved swiftly out from the trees, running yet everyone looked so slow in motion to Ross. They were strange looking, though inhumanly attractive.
“Luke and Rosetta.” Wylie muttered. Ross assumed those were the names of the first two. He watched another girl come out right behind them. She was the same as Luke. Red hair, but hers was in spiraling curls. She had green eyes and freckles also.
“I think her name starts with a C.” Stanly whispered. Ross didn’t take his focus away. Someone else came out a few seconds later. A tall muscular man, with caramel colored eyes and plain brown hair. ?“Who’s that one?” Ross asked. Wylie shrugged. Stanly thought about it.
“He’s one of the quiet ones. I’m not sure about his name.” He explained. The fifth and sixth came out. They looked different from the others. Both female. One brunette, with sun kissed skin. The other native skin and dark long hair. Both of them had brown eyes. “They are the adopted ones. Or that’s what people say anyways.” Wylie told Ross. Ross wondered how these people could possibly move so gracefully. They all headed over to the pile of rubble nearby. Their facial expressions made it seem like they were attending to important business. The last one came out with her family. She was the only one who actually looked in the direction of Ross and his companions. The other Alphas were looking through the pile or rubble and picking up bricks and other objects. It looked like they were observing them. The last girl had somewhat a smile on her face. Her skin was as pale as a beautiful Canadian winter. She had thick hips, which were complimented by the pencil skirt she wore. Makeup made her features even more noticeable, especially her eyes. Ross couldn’t believe what he saw. She had big vivid purple eyes. Even more fascinating then her long wavy strawberry blonde hair. She wore black books with high platforms, making the allusion that she was taller, but she really wasn’t all that tall even with the shoes. Ross admired the way she turned, to join her family gracefully sprinting over to them. They all looked like a beautiful painting together in that forest opening. Wylie, and Stanly chuckled just a bit when they saw...
