1. Why did you choose this topic?
To challenge the dominant ways in which globality, and its shared ›now‹, is perceived and represented in cultural theory, cultural discourse, and art institutions today. Contemporary art harbours the potentiality of what I call ›radical nuisance‹, a quality that emerges and manifests itself in artworks that understand globality otherwise, and I show how their insistence on questions of location, time, labour, and embodied histories tell us from where and for whom we reimagine and re-exist.
2. What new perspectives does your book offer?
Offering a referential framework for reading contemporary art’s imaginative potential, the book acknowledges the spatially and temporally locked condition that makes certain visual languages illegible within the existing eurocentric-modernity corpus. Arguing that artistic, curatorial, and institutional practices cannot be studied in isolation, it conceptualizes the existence of a deep trench to illuminate the layered negotiations between them.
3. What makes your topic relevant for current research debates?
I challenge the prevalent tendencies retrieving the past for cosmopolitan futures or those that position the ‘global south’ as a reservoir of tradition or a site of futurity, to re-centre the present by asking whose pasts are invoked and how the contemporary is actually shared. Exploring the regimes of racial and casteist representation, the book shows their entanglement equally in spatio-temporal legacies of modernity as much as they hierarchically arrange people and knowledges.
4. Choose one person you would like to discuss your book with!
Hard to choose but either Okwui Enwezor or Édouard Glissant!
5. Your book summary in one sentence:
How we encounter ›the other‹ is embedded in the infrastructure of contemporary art in the same way as hierarchies are in the foundation of what we call global today.
