Flio's back from the eastern island nation of Hi Izuru, and life in the Magical Kingdom of Klyrode is as chill as ever! There's his daughter Elinàsze's burgeoning magical workshop, personnel exchanges between the demonic Dark Army and the Magical Kingdom of Klyrode, and the new Hi Izuran staff settling into their roles at the Fli-o'-Rys General Store. But that isn't all that's in store for our humble yet nigh-omnipotent merchant. Flio has long resisted being given a noble title, but with all his contributions to the kingdom-from vanquishing magic beasts to negotiating trade agreements with neighboring territories, not to mention personally inventing many of the conveniences that define life in the new peaceful Klyrode-perhaps the time has come...

Chapter 1: Flio, Hard at Work

The world of Klyrode is a world of swords and sorcery, home to magic beasts and demihumans alike, where humans and demons had waged war since time immemorial.

That conflict came to an end, however, when the Magical Kingdom of Klyrode, greatest of the human kingdoms, signed a treaty of peace with the Dark Army, the preeminent organization among demonkind, ushering in a new way of life for both peoples. With new Malicium Neutralizers in operation across the land, humans and demons have begun to mingle within city boundaries—but the deep divisions remaining from their long years of conflict are just as real.

In the midst of this, trade and cultural exchange have continued apace thanks to the Enchanted Frigates, magnificent flying vessels that regularly tour not only the Enchanted Kingdom of Klyrode but its neighbors as well, including Hi Izuru, the Land of the Rising Sun.

As for Flio, proprietor of the Fli-o’-Rys General Store, the company responsible both for creating the Malicium Neutralizers and operating the fleet of Enchanted Frigates, he has had his hands full with everything—from promoting trade to assisting with the operations of the local school in order to assure a quality education for his children, not to mention running the magic beast racing hall and the Fli-o’-Rys Adventurers’ Academy. By now his reputation as someone who will take on any problem has extended past the borders of the Magical Kingdom itself.

With that, the stage is set. The curtains slowly rise...

?Houghtow City—Flio’s House?

Flio’s house stood on the outskirts of Houghtow City, a short distance down the road that led out from the city walls. Once upon a time it had been a small cozy cottage with little more than a single room for Flio and Rys, another room for Balirossa, Byleri, Blossom and Belano, and a humble living room. With Hiya, Ghozal, Uliminas, and each other new resident who came to join their household, however, Flio had added on further construction. The house had become a three-story mansion featuring a two-floor basement and joined by an appending two-story workshop building.

Today a small group had gathered outside a fair distance away from the house.

“So Korunoe,” Flio said, holding up a pair of wooden clockwork inventions to peer curiously at the ornamental craftsmanship decorating them, which seemed like they were meant to be worn on a person’s legs. “You say these devices can improve someone’s abilities in combat?”

Flio—a merchant from another world who was summoned to Klyrode as a candidate for the position of Hero. The blessing he received upon crossing over granted him mastery of every magic spell and every skill to exist in the world. These days he spent his time running the Fli-o’-Rys General Store alongside his wife Rys, a former Dark Army soldier. A proud father of a son and two daughters, plus two adopted dragonewts.

“That’s right,” answered Korunoe, stepping up beside him. “These are known as Augmented Legs, made using the techniques of the Clockwork Shinobi school. They draw power from the magic gems attached to the knees to let the user soar through the air, even those who can’t otherwise use flight magic.” He pressed his large round glasses up the bridge of his nose, smiling cheerfully.

Korunoe—a slight boy with a childlike face and pair of round glasses, and the last known survivor of the Clockwork Shinobi. Unlike other shinobi traditions, the Clockwork Shinobi specialized not in espionage but in the creation of various clockwork devices. Since the rest of his clan had been wiped out, Korunoe found himself under the protection of the Uga Shinobi Sasuran, although he now spent his time developing products for the Fli-o’-Rys General Store or else attending class at the Houghtow College of Magic.

Seeing the smile on Korunoe’s youthful features put Flio in something of a cheerful mood himself. “All right then!” he said. “Ready to take it for a test run?”

“By all means!” said Korunoe. “Although, if possible, I would like to have it tested by someone who can’t use magic themselves...”

“Someone who can’t use magic?” Flio asked.

“That’s right,” Korunoe explained. “These augmentations are calibrated for someone with no magic power of their own. If someone who did possess magic power used them, they would draw power not only from the magic gem but from the magic inside that person’s body as well. The combined power could run a risk of overloading the device...”

“I see!” Flio nodded. “That makes sense.”

“But my lord husband!” Rys objected, stepping up from behind. “Is there even anyone here who doesn’t have magic power...?”

Rys—a lupine demon, and former soldier of the Dark Army. After her defeat at the hands of Flio, she made the decision to walk alongside him as his wife. Now she was an excessively doting mother figure to everyone living at Flio’s house.

Rys pressed her pointer finger against her lips in thought, looking back over her shoulder at the crowd who had gathered to watch the unveiling of Korunoe’s new clockwork device.

“Hrm...” Ghozal grunted, folding his arms and shaking his head. “It would be easy enough to just seal someone’s magic...” he said. “But Korunoe, you said you wanted someone with no magic power at all? In that case I guess disqualified.”

Ghozal—once the Dark One and ruler of demonkind, Ghozal abdicated his throne in favor of his younger brother Yuigarde and went to live the life of a freeloader at Flio’s house. In their time living together, he and Flio had become something along the lines of best friends. He had taken two wives: Uliminas, his former confederate from the Dark Army, and Balirossa, human swordsman and former knight of Klyrode. Between them he had two children, Folmina and Ghoro. Currently he was gainfully employed as the head of the Fli-o’-Rys Adventurers’ Academy.

“Fair enough!” Flio acknowledged, smirking ruefully at Ghozal’s words. “Your magic power is top class even in this house, Ghozal...”

“And I suppose I would be disqualified as well...” added Rys with a sigh.

Tanya, who was standing beside her, slumped her shoulders in a dejected display as well. “It shames me to say this, as a maid of Master Flio himself, but I am afraid I will be of no use either...” she echoed.

Tanya—originally known as Tanyalina, an angelic Disciple of the Celestial Plane sent to monitor Flio due to the merchant’s outlandish magic power before she lost part of her memories in a freak midair collision with Wyne. Now she worked as the Flio household’s live-in maid.

“Um... If I may...?” ventured Balirossa, glancing Tanya’s way as she timidly raised her hand. “I-I only have enough magic to cast a common Cure spell, you know. Would that be all right, perhaps...?” she asked nervously, doing her best to be mindful of Tanya’s despondent mood.

Balirossa—originally the leader of the knightly company hailing from Klyrode Castle. She had since quit the knighthood to live full-time at Flio’s house, earning her keep by working at the Fli-o’-Rys General Store. She was one of Ghozal’s two wives, and the mother of Ghoro.

“I’m sorry...” Korunoe winced, bowing apologetically several times in a row. “I really hate to say it, but I would prefer to have someone with no magic power whatsoever to test the Augmented Legs...”

“Oh, no no!” Balirossa said, matching Korunoe’s contrition with a series of apologetic bows of her own. “I’m the one who spoke out of turn! I’m so very sorry for bothering you unduly!”

The two of them continued their duel of apologies for a short while, each meeting an expression of remorse with another until...

“Hey-hey!” An energetic voice came from overhead.

“What’s that?” Korunoe and Balirossa both said in unison, interrupting their contest to look up at the sky where they could see Wyne flying overhead, draconic wings on her back.

Wyne—a wyvern dragonewt said to be the mightiest warrior among all dragonkind. Flio and Rys once discovered her collapsed by the side of the road and rescued her, adopting her into the family where she became an older sister to Elinàsze and the other children.

“Whatcha up to?” Wyne asked, descending to the ground with a gleam in her eye at the sight of the Augmented Legs in Korunoe’s arms. “Looks fun-fun!”

“Oh!” Flio said, moving to stop her. “Wyne, I don’t think that’s a good idea!”

Wyne, however, moved faster than the eye could follow, snatching the Augmented Legs from Korunoe and putting them on before anyone could stop her—not on her legs, but on her arms. “Wah ha ha!” she laughed.

“M-Miss Wyne?!” Korunoe exclaimed, his eyes going wide. At first he couldn’t understand what he had just seen happen, but as he took in the sight of Wyne with the Augmented Legs on her arms, eyes shining with anticipation, his expression turned suddenly stiff. “U-Um... Miss Wyne...?”

“Hm? What’s up-up?” Wyne chirped.

“I-I really must implore you...” Korunoe said, hesitating. “Would you try not to think any dangerous thoughts while you’re wearing those?”

“Dangerous...
