Capitalism is not broken, but the way we work inside it is. Collective Capitalism introduces a modern alternative to traditional corporate employment and the isolating grind of entrepreneurship. Drawing from real experience building and scaling a professional collective, this book presents a new model for how people can work with autonomy, shared success, and purpose without sacrificing ambition or income. It explores why legacy corporate structures no longer serve today's workforce and how decentralized, people-first organizations can create stronger businesses and more fulfilling careers. Practical, candid, and grounded in lived results, Collective Capitalism offers a clear path forward for professionals and leaders ready to rethink how work actually works.

Paul Lewis is a seasoned executive who has experienced success both in starting companies and playing key roles in well-established corporations. Throughout his career, Paul became frustrated not with the ethics of the system, but with its lack of balance. He found that senior corporate roles required surrendering incrementally larger chunks of time and playing politics, while pure entrepreneurship resulted in grueling sixty-hour work weeks with insufficient resources. Paul joined Chameleon Collective in its early stages to help pioneer a business model that solves the 'all or nothing' nature of modern work. He champions the collective model for executives who want to remain dedicated to producing great results without sacrificing their personal lives, proving that professionals can find happiness and mutual success without it being a zero-sum game.

Introduction

“It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest.

—Adam Smith, Scottish economist and philosopher

Capitalism is broken.

Before you dismiss those words as the preview to some form of socialism run amok, understand that we are not advocating for anything other than capitalism. We are die-hard capitalists and believe in its ability to act as the fuel to light the fire of the global economy for the foreseeable future.

The principles and theories that have made capitalism the greatest economic system in the world need not be destroyed, nor do they require a tear-down. Rather, they’re in desperate need of a course correction—something to shift it back on the right track. Capitalism must evolve.

An update is needed to optimize the evolving skills, unique abilities, lifestyle demands, and technological nuances of modern society. Most importantly, we need to create a better way to build businesses and allow people to work in a way that benefits the greater good, not the greater power. We’ve found an amazing way to accomplish these things—collective capitalism.

Unless you’re a professor teaching economic theory at a top-rated business school, you likely aren’t familiar with the term. It’s not part of common speech…at least, not yet. Our goal is to change that, and we hope that after reading about its many benefits, you’ll help us spread the word.

Collective Capitalism is an economic model that integrates the fundamental aspects of capitalism—competition, innovation, and value creation—into an equitable framework where success is derived from merit rather than corporate hierarchy or inherited advantages. This model promotes a level playing field with clear, transparent rules and decentralized decision-making, allowing individuals to maximize their potential.

At the personal level, collective capitalism encourages autonomy and fulfillment, reducing bureaucracy and inefficiency to enable professionals to flourish in a flexible, self-managed work environment. On a societal level, it nurtures a dynamic and inclusive economy built on collaboration and shared success, aligning economic incentives with human potential to drive innovation, productivity, and create a healthier, more resilient workforce and society where opportunity is genuinely available to everyone.

Our professional services company, Chameleon Collective, was born from this more equitable and evolved business model. We believe this is the next step for capitalism to take—one that will allow greater numbers of people to prosper financially and enjoy more balanced and fulfilling lives. After all, what good is money if you don’t have the time, freedom, and flexibility to enjoy it?

Chameleon Collective happened more out of necessity than anything else. We had grown too far disillusioned with the inequities and inefficiency of trying to make the current system work, so we set out to create something better.

We began a venture that would turn our individual frustrations into collective inspiration. Since its inception, Chameleon Collective has enriched the lives of hundreds of members (not workers, but like-minded and equal professionals). The business, as a whole, has become enormously successful, winning awards and churning out satisfied clients with extreme consistency. Do we have a secret ingredient? No. We have a business model that simply makes sense. Collective capitalism is better suited to take advantage of the technological advances we’ve all come to know and love. It’s not only a great way to work; it flat-out builds better businesses.

Now, we want to share this necessary evolutionary step-up for capitalism with the world. In fact, we would like nothing more than for you to take the knowledge from this book and turn it into your own collective business. Join us in building a better way to work and live. |

Turn Frustration Into Inspiration

In 2015, we were fed up—fed up with our jobs and with the companies we worked for, fed up with the lack of control over how we worked, who we worked with, and when and where we did that work. Moreover, we were frustrated and thoroughly disillusioned with the corporate system.

And while we had worked in “corporate America,” we had also been entrepreneurs. Being an entrepreneur may sound glamorous, and it can be incredibly lucrative, but it’s also incredibly difficult and exhausting. We were tired of how that role was structured and how we, as entrepreneurs, were expected to delegate tasks and manage others while absorbing risks that could be downright terrifying.

We were at an impasse. We tried the corporate model and found its success (or failure) no longer fit. But we also knew we didn’t want to start a new company–because it would carry the same baggage that we wanted to transform. We yearned for change and a new approach. We wanted to do something different–and to do it differently.

There had to be a better way, a middle path or a third option, that we could follow and succeed.

We were willing to try anything to reset the system to something that felt right, no matter how radical it may have been at the time. So, we gathered a group of like-minded, similarly frustrated professionals and gave ourselves the freedom to figure it out together. We would keep iterating on it until it worked. Ideally, we wanted to create a structure that felt more equitable and was driven by our shared vision of career happiness and fulfillment. Could we build a business where we loved doing our jobs? Could we find happiness and mutual success without it being a zero-sum game?

As it happened, the answer was yes. We just didn’t know exactly what to call it right away.

It was during this time–when we were all frustrated–that Freddie was approached with a consulting gig, one that was more than he could handle alone. So, he called upon a few people who would become our earliest collaborators to do the job together with two important changes:

  1. They would do the job, collectively, as equals.
  2. They would make happiness (not profit) their top priorities. It would simply be a group of highly skilled, talented, and trustworthy professionals working toward a unified goal of shared, enhanced success.

The result was better than any of them could have hoped. The client was delighted because the group delivered high-quality services. Meanwhile, all collaborators got to be their own boss and earned more for their efforts than they would have in a traditional business model.

That project was the spark of awareness that we could build a business in a better way. It became clear how well our belief of a better way to work resonated with everyone involved. This nascent idea in the way capitalism could be approached became a newly formed venture–the Chameleon Collective. After the first year of operation, Juan and Paul joined the team and greater success followed. Soon, we were talking to other clients and other leaders who wanted to come on board. We didn’t know it at the time, but there were a lot of people just like us—equally frustrated about the status quo of the traditional business model and inspired to create something much more professionally and personally fulfilling.

To the outside world, we are a professional services firm that supports PE & VC firms and their portfolio companies with expertise in branding, marketing, sales, customer experience, commerce, and executive recruiting. We realized that often the best way to solve a client’s problem wasn’t just to consult, but to find them the permanent talent to fix it from within. Our advantage lies in the fact that we are an entire company built on entrepreneurial-minded professionals. Most of us have been leaders and highly sought-after professionals for highly successful companies. As you’ll learn later, we attract unhirable talent—top-notch consultants and industry experts who would not work for any other company.

We’ve worked with some of the most renowned investors in the world and an extensive list of Fortune 1000 companies. Inc. Magazine has recognized the Chameleon Collective as one of the fastest-growing companies in America for three consecutive years. We’ve been listed by Forbes in the top 100 of America’s Best Startup Employers…twice. So, what was once deemed a crazy idea works–and it could work for you, too.

The goal of the Chameleon Collective isn’t to make money for the company itself. It is to make money for each other, sharing our success instead of competing for the spoils, which has led us to being more successful than we ever could have imagined. Members of our collective have enjoyed greater financial success, career satisfaction, and personal fulfillment. You’ll read many of their stories, and about the positive impact our new way to work has had on their lives.
