In the context of worldwide interest in commemorating the centenary of the commencement of World War I, the ‘Great War’, there is the need for an assessment of India and World War I. In the field of war studies known as ‘war and society’, researchers looks at war as a major determinant of social change - as opposed to the examination of strategy and battles and leaders, both civilian and military.
This book analyses offers new research perspectives on India and World War I. It focuses on the cultural, political, and social dimension of India’s place in the war. The war altered the relationships between the colonial power and India’s citizens, but also highlights the remarkable contribution Indians made to the war effort. As a result, the Great War dramatically changed India both with regard to the body politic and in terms of the economic, social, and psychological dynamics between Indians and the British.
A new, innovative and multidisciplinary examination of India and World War I, this book presents a select number of case studies showing the intimate relationship of the global war and its social, political and economic impacts on the Indian subcontinent. It will be of interest to academics in the field of War Studies, Colonial and Imperial History and South Asian and Modern Indian History.
