German knights of the early 16th century had to face and cope with a number of challenges regarding their privileged role in society. How they prevailed is examined in this book by rereading autobiographical accounts. By the examples of Ulrich von Hutten (1480–1523), Götz von Berlichingen (c. 1480–1562), and Sigmund von Herberstein (1486–1566) it is demonstrated how the various crises of being a knight were innovatively solved in and by texts. This reveals a crucial interdependence between knighthood – as a community of shared memory and dispositions – and its narrative constitution.
