1. Why did you choose this topic?
We chose this topic because understanding intercultural dynamics is crucial for researching digital communication. Ingroup–outgroup boundaries, unfamiliarity, and emergent norms shape how we interact online. At the same time, studying digital spaces helps us rethink intercultural communication by considering platform design, multimodality, and new forms of meaning-making.
2. What new perspectives does your book offer?
The book offers new theoretical insights into intercultural communication and sociolinguistics in the context of postdigital societies. It also presents diverse empirical studies examining these themes through lenses such as social media, language technologies, digital activism, and corporate digital communication.
3. What makes your topic relevant for current research debates?
Our topic addresses two gaps: first, although intercultural dynamics often shape digital communication, they are frequently overlooked in related research; second, intercultural communication studies still largely focus on face-to-face and on-site encounters. Considering the impact of digitalization on these encounters is essential for understanding how communication unfolds in our postdigital, globally connected lives.
4. Choose one person you would like to discuss your book with!
We would have liked to discuss the book with Jan Blommaert, whose work has deeply shaped our understanding of language, power, postdigitality, and globalization. His insights into sociolinguistics and discourse in digitally mediated contexts resonate strongly with our approach.
5. Your book summary in one sentence:
The book explores how digital technologies mediate intercultural encounters, advancing the concept of digital interculturality.
