Many rivers in the world are drastically being altered to levels often beyond their natural resilience capability. Among the different types of human interventions, mining of sand and gravel is the most disastrous one, as the activity threatens the very existence of river ecosystem. A better understanding of sand budget is necessary if the problems of river and coastal environments are to be solved.
Dr. D. Padmalal is a research scientist at the Centre for Earth Science Studies (Trivandrum, Kerala, India). He is an expert in Quaternary Geology and Environmental Geology and has been studying sand mining and related environmental problems for almost 20 years.Dr. K. Maya is a research scientist at the Centre for Earth Science Studies (Trivandrum, Kerala, India). She is an expert in River Basin Studies and River Management & Restoration. She has been working in these fields for almost 15 years.
