Chapter One
What Is ChangeFit™ —
and Why It Matters
“Change is no longer another thing to manage—it is the backdrop of organisational life, and ChangeFit™ makes it sustainable.”
This first chapter sets the stage for the entire book by exploring what ChangeFit™ is and why it matters in today’s environment of relentless transformation. It outlines the forces that have made change constant—from global disruption to evolving customer expectations—and explains why traditional, project-based approaches to change are no longer enough. The chapter introduces the concept of building enterprise-wide change capability, where every employee, leader, and executive plays an active role. It positions ChangeFit™ as not just another initiative, but as the cultural DNA that enables organisations to adapt sustainably, protect wellbeing, and gain a competitive edge.
The Constant Pace of Change
There was a time when businesses could count on periods of stability, with a significant change arriving once every few years. This gave leaders and teams the breathing space to adjust before the next wave rolled in. Today, those calm waters are gone. Markets shift overnight, technology redefines entire industries in a matter of months, and global events can upend carefully laid strategies before the ink is even dry. Change is no longer an occasional disruption; it has become the permanent backdrop to how business is conducted.
The COVID-19 pandemic crystallised this reality for many organisations. Overnight, entire industries had to reinvent how they operated—adopting remote work, reshaping supply chains, redesigning customer experiences, and addressing community needs in radically new ways. The speed of adaptation was not optional; it was a condition of survival. While the crisis may have passed, the expectation of agility has not.
At the same time, technological advances continue to accelerate the pace of disruption. Artificial intelligence, automation, and digital platforms don’t just add efficiency—they fundamentally change the skills required, the roles people perform, and the value propositions that organisations can offer. Entire industries have been reshaped in just a few years, with new business models emerging faster than many organisations can adapt.
Beyond technology and crisis response, marketplaces and customer expectations are evolving at an unprecedented speed. Customers demand more personalised, ethical, and transparent interactions. Communities expect organisations to demonstrate not only financial performance but also social responsibility, inclusivity, and sustainability. These external forces push change back into organisations, requiring them to continually realign their strategy, especially during periods of transformation. The result is a business landscape defined by speed, complexity, and constant disruption.
The pace and unpredictability of today’s environment are often described through the lens of VUCA—a term originating with the U.S. Army War College in the late 1980s to describe conditions of Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. Once used to explain the chaos of military operations, it now perfectly captures the landscape in which modern organisations operate. Volatility reflects the speed and turbulence of change; uncertainty highlights the difficulty of predicting outcomes; complexity points to the interdependent nature of systems, markets, and technologies; and ambiguity underscores the lack of clarity about cause and effect. The COVID-19 pandemic offered a stark demonstration of VUCA in action: in a matter of weeks, global supply chains collapsed, entire industries were forced to reinvent operating models, and leaders had to make critical decisions with incomplete information. VUCA is more than a description of external forces—it is a lived experience for leaders, employees, and communities. Recognising and preparing for it is essential to building organisations that can adapt, learn, and thrive in the face of constant disruption.
In this context, ChangeFit™ provides the mindset, language, and capability that enable organisations to operate effectively in a VUCA world—where change is not an occasional disruption, but the environment in which every decision, relationship, and result unfolds.
What We Mean by “Change”
In this book, the word change refers to any shift—large or small—that alters the way an organisation operates, behaves, or delivers its purpose. Change can take many forms: restructures, mergers, or role redesigns; the introduction of new strategies, priorities, or business models; culture and leadership changes; the rollout or replacement of systems and technology; the introduction of new policies, regulations, or compliance frameworks; shifts in customer expectations; or adjustments to how services are delivered. Whether driven by internal ambition or external pressure, every form of change requires people to think, feel, and work differently. ChangeFit™ applies across all these contexts—providing the mindset, structure, and capability needed to help individuals and organisations adapt, sustain, and thrive, no matter what type of change they face.
Change is everyone's Responsibility.
In this environment, the way organisations approach change must also evolve. Traditional models, where change is treated as an occasional project supported by a small team of specialists, are no longer sufficient. Change is not a side activity; it is a constant condition of organisational life. That is why everyone needs to understand change and play an active part in it. Change is not just the responsibility of executives, sponsors, or project managers. Every leader, every team, and every employee has a role to play in navigating, adopting, and sustaining change. In practice, this means building mindsets and capabilities that are shared across the enterprise—where people know not only what is changing but how to support themselves, their colleagues, and their organisation through it.
This is the foundation of ChangeFit™: the recognition that change is “no longer another thing to do; it is how we do what we do.” When organisations embed change into their DNA—into behaviours, communication rhythms, leadership practices, and everyday habits—they become more resilient, more adaptive, and more capable of thriving in a world that will only continue to evolve. ChangeFit™ is not about making change easier. It is about making change sustainable by aligning the psychological, behavioural, technical, and cultural dimensions of transformation into a holistic model that everyone participates in. It reframes change from being an external imposition to being an internal capability—a muscle that strengthens with each use. In this environment, how an organisation navigates change is as important as what it delivers. That is where ChangeFit™ comes in.
Developing a ChangeFit™ Culture: It is not another thing to do; it is how we do what we do.
ChangeFit™ —Developing an Organisation-Wide Capability
ChangeFit™ is more than a training program, a framework, or a set of tools. It is an organisation-wide approach to developing a culture that builds both mindset and capability, integrating the technical expertise required to deliver change, with the psychological resilience needed to thrive in constant transformation. In a world where disruption is inevitable, ChangeFit™ shifts the way organisations think about and engage with change, from a series of projects to a core enterprise capability.
Creating a ChangeFit™ culture means developing organisational capability that understands its role in change, from Senior Executives through to Employees. Any change an organisation makes goes far beyond managing milestones or rolling out new systems. It means the organisation:
Understands the holistic nature of change—recognising that every initiative affects not only systems and processes but also roles, behaviours, relationships, and emotions. ChangeFit™ ensures that leaders and teams approach change as a connected ecosystem, rather than a series of isolated events.
Prepares people at all levels—from frontline teams through to the C-suite—to adapt with clarity and confidence. Change is not the job of a select few; everyone in the organisation has a role to play in embedding and sustaining it. This shared readiness creates alignment, reduces resistance, and accelerates adoption.
Supports both performance and wellbeing—recognising that sustainable change needs more than just technical implementation. It requires healthy, engaged, and resilient individuals. By equipping people with the skills to manage their own reactions and support others, ChangeFit™ enhances organisational health while delivering business results.
In other words, ChangeFit™ does not just teach people how to survive change — it helps them actively shape and sustain it. Employees learn to anticipate the emotions and uncertainties of transformation, communicate openly, and support themselves and their colleagues through what can often be a rollercoaster of the change process. Leaders, in turn, develop the ability to model behaviours, foster psychological safety,...
