Timo Plutschinski, an evangelical theologian, is Director of the World Evangelical Alliance´s Business Coalition and member of the Wider WEA Leadership. He furthermore serves as Pastor of a Baptist Church in Hamburg and as a fellow at the Olivet Institute for Global Strategic Studies. Overview of theses:
1) Artificial Intelligence is pervading all machines, systems and devices, all offices and all private lives. The digital companions will be omnipresent and unobtrusive. They are extremely useful and that’s why we use them.
2) In a fully connected and digitalized world we need new ways to balance the tensions between people, cultures, technologies, virtual realities, and AI objects with own consciousness.
3) Digital platforms are the key to new value chains as a new global marketplace for goods and services.
4) Many professions will disappear, but completely new ones will also emerge - at all levels of competence.
5) The biggest cultural revolution since Gutenberg is taking place by the AI Gamechanger. We have the chance to use artificial intelligence to drive the digital transformation in a responsible way before others do it irresponsibly.
We live in the middle of the biggest cultural revolution since Gutenberg, who in 1450 turned Europe and the world upside down within 10 years by introducing mass letterpress printing. Within less than a generation, most people in Europe were able to read, and as a result there were violent upheavals in all areas of social life that lasted for over 100 years.
The digital companions will be omnipresent and unobtrusive
Thesis 1:
Artificial Intelligence is pervading all machines, systems and devices, all offices and all private lives. The digital companions will be omnipresent and unobtrusive. They are extremely useful and that’s why we use them.
Machines, devices, digital platforms and smartphones increasingly have their own consciousness and make their own creative decisions that no one has taught them before. We still have time for this!
For a long time now, statistically speaking, every citizen of the earth has a cell phone.
The number of smartphones is 2019 only 3.2 billion. Approximately 0.5 billion smartphones are added annually. Nevertheless, it will still take 5 – 10 years for the smartphone to reach the ends of the world.
Almost everyone on this world will have access to everything around the globe – be it data, be it the international markets, be it educational needs. Even today, the cell phone is already in the pyramid of needs just like water, food and education among the street children of Africa. Because every street child knows: “I won’t survive without SMS”.
The digital companions are extremely useful and that’s why we use them. At the moment our digital companions are still pretty stupid. When they become intelligent, they will think for themselves and make independent decisions that nobody has taught them before. They will do what is allowed and what is not allowed.
Here’s an example: One of our digital companions will be the self-driving car, an intelligent robot on wheels, so to speak. Such a self-driving car, which thinks for itself, will naturally drive faster in the 50 zone than 50 when everyone else is driving faster. It will obey rules as much or as little as we do. That’s why we will have to have punishment procedure for fully automatic cars. Thus, these cars will download blitzer.de to receive radar warnings.
Such a digital companion can also be a pair of 3D glasses, with which I am instructed as a craftsman how to mount the window best. In the glasses I then see with a mixture of reality and simulation what I am doing at the moment, if I am doing it right and what I have to do next. The system will also help me learn from my mistakes and help me with my weak points. If it is well done, it is a real win-win situation.
In China it has become already common to pay by face recognition without any credit card. And people like it, despite the fact that huge amounts of data are collected about all personal movement and actions. Now you may argue: We must ban these digital companions from thinking for themselves. But do you really think anyone on this globe would be interested if we were to ban machines and devices from thinking on an island of the blessed in Germany, Great Britain or any other European country?
Such intelligent objects will come and have their own consciousness, at least on the intelligence level of a more highly developed animal, such as the raven, horse or dog. No matter whether we like it or not.
Digital real or virtual digital companions will become inconspicuous and omnipresent in many areas step by step. And in certain areas, they will simply be able to do more than we humans can do. That’s because they can collect and process vast amounts of data. And by 2030, much of this will already have become “normal”.
If that is the case, then such digital companions will make decisions independently, they will have creative ideas and develop new concepts. In short: They will display behavior that no one has taught them before. In the combination of a lot of data, neural networks and the ever more sophisticated algorithms of artificial intelligence, independent learning of these digital companions is no longer a problem. These devices are able to reflect on what they have learned. They are able to develop completely new behavioral strategies.
That is why the objects of this world that work with such a strong artificial intelligence must in the long run become legal entities in their own right, as the European Parliament rightly brought into the discussion. And there must be ethical standards and values for the algorithms of such digital companions. Then it will be a good thing, because we don’t need digital fools. We need the digital companions as useful partners, which need mass data as the essential basis of artificial intelligence. A digital “shadow economy” has emerged.
If you have to go to a larger city in the morning at 07:00 am for example, in 10 years it will not be a problem at all for an intelligent navigation system to look at the traffic jam development of the last 10 years in this time interval and also to look at the weather data and then perhaps give you a recommendation: If you wait 5 minutes before leaving today, it will be faster. For us humans this is impossible. The majority of us will use it when it is available. The reason for this is: Utility triumphs over data privacy.
Thus, the useful idiots in our cars and our trouser pockets will gradually become indispensable partners. We already do not want to live without. Anyone who has ever appreciated the quality of Google Maps’ traffic jam forecasts no longer cares that they are being tracked digitally - who cares where I am going, as long as I can avoid the traffic jam ahead of me. And the really good navigation systems in premium vehicles use precisely this Google data as a basis. And then have a complete picture of user behavior. No data protection law will be able to stop this development. The digital revolution with artificial intelligence is turning everything upside down.
We need new ways to balance the tensions

In a fully connected and digitalized world we need new ways to balance the tensions between people, cultures, technologies, virtual realities, and AI objects with own consciousness.
As with all innovation cycles, digital transformation with intelligent machines and objects also leads to massive changes in the working environment. Are we going to run out of human labor? Or is it just changing massively?
Considering this, we have to keep in mind fundamental areas of tensions. Driven by the possibilities of digital networks and the interconnection of events around the world, more and more multinational organizations are emerging, and there are more and more companies that are quite small but do business on a global level. This trend continues to drive complexity and dynamics worldwide. For example, small aid organizations with a dozen employees can do a lot of good around the world. However, digital communication also makes it easy to establish profitable trafficking organizations for refugees. This dichotomy played out on a global scale will irreversibly influence working and living conditions.
The potential for tension between nations and cultures is getting bigger and bigger and is irresolvable.
Increasingly, national identities and cultures are colliding – often without restraint. Conversely, the often unfulfilled need for purely national identity and the need for home and belonging is growing rapidly within a manageable framework.
The tension between people and technologies remains unchanged – first in love with new technology, then disillusioned, then realistic.
The well-worn tensions between people and new technologies remain fundamentally unchanged. However, we as societies have still not understood how to overcome the phase of infatuation with new technologies more quickly and how to become realistic. What has changed is our dependence on technical systems. There will be fewer and fewer jobs without intelligent technical systems.
The areas of conflict between the various scientific disciplines and between many job profiles will increase.
As the great innovations and new tasks arise precisely from the interaction between different disciplines and occupational groups, the resulting new “subjects” and the new job profiles associated with them can no longer be fitted into the old “boxes” of the existing disciplines. This is inconvenient, but an unavoidable consequence of the massively increased complexity and dynamics...
