Chapter 1.1 Understand What Claude Can Do

You can ask Claude a question and receive an answer in seconds. That conversation is useful, but it is only one way to work with the product.

This chapter will show you how a useful conversation can grow into research, a finished deliverable, and a repeatable work process.

From chatbot to work platform

The back-and-forth exchange of chat messages that you are already familiar with is still at the center of Claude, hence the name of Chat mode. But Claude can do much more. Depending on your plan, you can speak, show it a photo, upload a document like a spreadsheet, search the web, or connect information from another service.

Claude can also help with work that lasts longer than one reply:

  • Research gathers and combines information from several sources. You will learn about this in .
  • Projects keep related chats, instructions, and files together. You will learn about this in .
  • Cowork can complete longer assignments and produce documents, slide decks, spreadsheets, and reports. You will learn about this in .
  • Scheduled tasks can run once, repeat, or watch for a change. You will learn about this and other automation features in .

A work platform gives you several ways to reach an outcome. You choose the goal, supply useful context, set limits, and review what comes back. Claude supplies speed and a wide base of general knowledge. You remain responsible for the purpose and the final decision.

Tasks Claude handles well

Claude works best when you can describe the result and check the response. A suitable task has enough information, a clear audience, and a useful format. It also has consequences you can manage if the answer is incomplete or wrong:

Type of task

What Claude can help you do

What you should check

Explore

Suggest choices, questions, risks, or another approach.

Assumptions, bias, and options it left out.

Research

Search sources, compare claims, and prepare a cited report.

Source quality, dates, quotations, and claims.

Learn

Explain a topic, give examples, or make a quiz.

Accuracy, missing points, and whether the explanation fits you.

Analyze

Find patterns in a table and create a chart or explanation.

The source data, calculations, labels, and scale.

Create

Draft a message, plan, diagram, chart, document, or presentation.

Facts, fit for the audience, permissions, and final polish.

Transform

Summarize, rewrite, translate, classify, or extract details.

Lost meaning, tone, privacy, and copyright.

Good practice: The best results come from pairing AI help with a check you know how to perform. If you do not have the experience to judge the output, ask a trusted person or qualified professional to review it.

Community arts center example

Imagine a community arts center wants more people to attend its weekend workshops. A staff member could upload survey data and approved planning notes, and then ask Claude about them:

shows Claude’s response and annotates some common Chat mode user interface elements:

  1. Select Close sidebar to make more space for your chat conversations.
  2. Select the chat options button to pop up actions like Star, Mark as unread, Rename, Add to project, and Delete.
  3. Files added to a chat, like Word documents and Excel spreadsheets, have their file types recognized automatically.
  4. Select Recents in the sidebar to show and hide your recent chats.
  5. Hover over Recents and select the switches icon to organize them into groups.
  6. Select the down-arrow button to quickly scroll to the bottom of the response.
  7. Select the + button in the chat box to add files to your chat prompt.

For this example prompt, Claude will compare three options, find patterns in public data, and draft a one-page recommendation:

  1. Select the sidebar icon to open the sidebar when it’s been closed.
  2. Select the document in the response to open it in a sidebar on the right. This is called the Artifacts panel.
  3. The response-generated document can be opened in Google Drive, downloaded, expanded to make more space, or closed with the x button.
  4. The chat box has controls to change the model and effort, as well as record a dictated prompt or use voice mode.

The staff member would then check the data, open the sources, and decide which option fits the center’s budget and goals.

Chat features

You can activate additional features by clicking the + button on the left side of the chat box:

For example, if you want the response to be as up-to-date as possible with the latest information, make sure that Web search is enabled for this chat so Claude does not only rely on its model data that will have a cut-off date in the past.

You will learn about these extra features in the following chapters:

  • Add files or photos, and Take a screenshot:
  • Add to project:
  • Skills, Add connector, and...
