Chapter I: Inglis, Age 16—Peace Negotiations

It was a foggy morning at the Chiral Knights’ Academy, with cloudy skies and passing showers. The rainfall was clear—nothing other than water falling from the sky. Inglis stood quietly by the window, taking in the dreary scenery, and let out a listless sigh.

“Inglis...” Meltina muttered as she rubbed her eyes. Still in her pajamas, she had stayed the night in Inglis and Rafinha’s room.

“Oh, good morning, Meltina. Did you sleep well?” Inglis asked.

“Not really...” she replied, a hint of bitterness on her face.

“Really?”

The room was filled with the sound of Rafinha’s comfortable sleeping breaths—that is, the girl’s cacophonous snores.

“I’m amazed—it looked as though you were deep in your thoughts,” Meltina said.

“Well, I guess I’m kinda used to it.”

“If it weren’t for the noise, it would be so picturesque. I could get lost in the scenery,” Leone said from a separate bed. Her eyes were open and held no trace of sleepiness, suggesting she’d been awake for a little while.

“Good morning, Leone.”

Next to Leone, Liselotte lay on her stomach, half-pushing herself up with her arms. “And just what is on your mind, Inglis?”

“I was wondering if we might see the Prism Flow fall.” Inglis sighed again.

Liselotte chuckled. “Ha ha ha... I suppose I didn’t even need to ask.”

“That one’s an easy guess, yeah.” Leone laughed. “But even if it were the Prism Flow, didn’t they say the Paladins would be handling it?”

“Yes, we were told to focus on our studies,” Liselotte said.

With the Paladins garrisoned at the capital, they would be ready to respond immediately if the Prism Flow fell. Their flying battleship, necessary for their normal deployments, was undergoing repairs, so they were unable to move out. However, this meant that the defenses around the capital were unusually strong, allowing the cadets of the knights’ academy to focus on their classes and training.

“But!” Inglis began enthusiastically. “There are no classes today, so it’s fine if I go out and fight, right?”

A peaceful school life had its merits, but Inglis longed for combat. Rochefort and Arles, normally her most willing opponents, were currently away—as were Yua and Silva, her most powerful seniors. With the Paladins’ flying battleship still docked, it fell to the Rangers to patrol for any instances of Prism Flow.

Inglis had, of course, asked to accompany the Rangers, but they hadn’t selected her for the crew. Apparently, those involved had come to the conclusion that her and Rafinha’s appetites would create logistical problems. With Meltina along as well, the ship’s mess hall stood no match.

Inglis and her friends had also spent some time away from the academy while staying in Illuminas, so they had fallen behind in their classes—hence the suggestion to stay behind and focus on their schoolwork.

Therefore, Inglis wanted the Prism Flow to fall here and now.

“Well, I suppose we have today off, and that’s a rarity,” Leone remarked.

“After a good night’s sleep, I can’t wait to go out and enjoy the day with everyone,” Liselotte said.

“Am I the only one who didn’t sleep well?!” Meltina was in utter shock.

“I wouldn’t say I don’t notice the snoring, just... We have a lot of experience sharing a room with her.”

“Surprisingly, it seems as often away from the academy as when we’re here.”

“Yes, we’ve traveled to so many places.”

As they spoke, Leone and Liselotte sat on the edge of Rafinha’s bed, looking at her smiling, sleeping face.

“She really is so cute. I wonder where noises like that even come from.” Leone poked her cheek.

“It truly is a mystery.” Liselotte joined in, going for her neck.

“Mmm... Mmmmmm... Wait, Ambassador Theodore, Chris will catch us...” Rafinha squirmed a bit too happily.

Leone and Liselotte looked a bit uncomfortable at that. “Ah... Ha ha ha...”

“Er...”

Inglis pushed the two girls aside and shook Rafinha awake. “Rani! C’mon, no weird dreams!”

Rafinha awoke with a start. “Huh? Hwah?! Chris?!”

“Just what were you dreaming about?”

“I-It doesn’t matter! It was just a dream.” Rafinha’s guilt was obvious; she looked out the window, avoiding eye contact. “Ah! Hey, Chris, look at that!”

“You can’t change the subject that easily.”

“No, seriously! Look! Isn’t that part of Highland?!”

“Wha—?!” Inglis gasped. Rafinha was pointing to a massive island floating in the sky. One whose imposing features Inglis recognized. It was Rüstung, ruled by Dux Jildegrieva.

“C’mon, Chris, isn’t that...?”

“Yeah, that’s Dux Jil! We get to see him again!” While she stared up at Rüstung, Inglis’s eyes gleamed as if she were a girl in love. This was perfect timing.

“Hey, Rafinha...” Leone began.

“You know what it means when Inglis makes that face,” Liselotte said.

“Yeah, and it never turns out well,” Rafinha said.

???

Given the sudden appearance of a massive part of Highland overhead, Chiral was abuzz from the early hours. The children were filled with innocent joy.

“Wow! It’s huuuge!”

“Incredible! It looks so cool!”

Meanwhile, the adults watched on with unease.

“It’s gigantic! I’ve never seen Highland up close like this!”

“I-Is a new ambassador coming?”

“It’s not here to attack us like that ship from Venefic, is it?”

It fell to our heroines to reassure the citizens. Rafinha, Leone, and Liselotte called out to them in turn.

“It’s okay, everyone! That’s not an enemy!”

“There’s nothing to worry about!”

“Indeed, be at ease!” Rafinha was aboard the , while Liselotte flew on her own via her Gift and carried Leone. With Inglis and Meltina on the as well, it would have been a bit too crowded for their entire group.

A boy called out to Rafinha. “Hey, lady in the funny-colored boat! How can you tell?”

“I-It is not funny-colored! It’s cute!” Rafinha yelled back, pouting. Even after a thorough rebuild, the was still painted Rafinha’s preferred girly-pink.

“I told you we should have picked a new color to go along with the repairs,” Inglis said. However, that suggestion had been shot down out of hand, and the Flygear had been restored to its previous glory.

“Ha ha ha... think it’s cute, but I suppose not everyone would agree,” Meltina said with a wry chuckle.

“A-Anyway! We know those Highlanders. They’re not bad people, so don’t worry.”

“Really? I wanted to see the knights fight them,” the boy replied in disappointment. “It would’ve been really awesome!”

Inglis laughed from the pilot’s seat. “I would have liked to see that too.”

Rafinha shot a glance at Inglis. “You would have done more than just watch, and you know it.”

“Ha ha ha... I hope there’s no fighting. We don’t want a war...” Meltina laughed uneasily.

“But you know! It might not be a big fight, but in just a minute, you’ll probably get to watch a one-on-one!” Inglis called to the boy.

“Huh? Really?”

“Yeah. Only two people, but I’m sure it’ll be worth watching.”

“Chris, you mean...?”

“Yeah. He should be here any moment.” She could already sense that fierce, manly aura she’d encountered before.

The crowd began to shout.

“Hmm...?! Something’s coming down from above!”

“A person! I think that’s a person!”

A smile rose to Inglis’s face. “Yeah. It’s been a while.”

Here was someone with whom she was on the same page. Last time, their battle had ended in a draw, but this time, she had more practice under her belt.

“Sheesh!” Rafinha remarked. “At least do it somewhere where there’ll be less collateral damage!”

“Yeah, sure—”

“Hnnnnnnnnngh!” An imposing man landed with a deafening roar. His arms were crossed and he was as still, and as unmovable, as a statue as he slammed down, blasting the flagstones of the square into the air and sending up clouds of dust.

“Ha ha ha ha ha ha!” Dux Jildegrieva let out a jolly laugh.

“Th-That’s...”

“Dux Jildegrieva...”

“One of the most important Highlanders to exist today...”

Leone, Liselotte, and Meltina—who had not had the pleasure of meeting him before—were tense. Rafinha, of course, already knew him.

“Darn it, Jil! Don’t mess up the city like that! Do you have grace?!”

“Huh?! You must be Inglis’s... C’mon, I sensed her and I just couldn’t wait! Where’s Inglis?”

“Chris is right— Huh, she’s gone?! Aaagh!” With...
