The Authors and Their Perspectives

So, we told you a little about the book, and we told you why we wrote it and what we hope to accomplish (to get you a job as a senior leader in a corporate security setting, without repeating our mistakes). But why should you listen to us?

We will spend the next few pages outlining the backgrounds of your authors. We do this not for self-aggrandizement, not to stroke our egos, but for one simple reason. We want to hopefully convince you that we are subject matter experts when it comes to moving from public sector jobs to private sector positions.

We ask you to indulge us as we speak about our backgrounds. But as we write about our pedigrees and our experience, also understand that we know for a fact that each of our targeted readers (read, patriots) have expertise and backgrounds that are as impressive if not more impressive than our own backgrounds. The only difference is, we have already walked down the path of leaving government service, and you are either contemplating that move or currently undergoing that move.

When we set out to write this book, our goal was to make it stand out in the marketplace. We believed that we had insights and vantage points that only we could provide, but we also knew that we did not have all of the answers. Your authors are fortunate; we have dozens of friends and colleagues in the highest positions in the corporate security field, and in addition to our advice and offerings, we have asked our colleagues to also offer their wisdom and suggestions for candidates.

We have devoted the latter part of this book to the comments, recommendations, and sage wisdom of some of the nation’s most senior security executives. We thank those experts for their collective contributions to this book.

As you make your way through this book, you will realize that the majority of the book is written in Kevin’s voice, but it is usually because Phil and Kevin agree on the subject matter. On other subjects, you will see that Phil has offered his insight and because of disagreement or variations in our responses. Phil will offer his input as “Phil’s Take.”

You know what they say about opinions . . . everyone has one. So, there will be times in this book when you agree with Phil and times when you agree with Kevin. We also hope that there will be times that you disagree with both of us. We don’t have all of the answers, and on this subject matter, there will always be room for other opinions and other lines of thought.

Because we promised you transparency, let’s start off these biographies with one overarching truth. Your authors, Phil Carlson and Kevin Rice, are very good friends. We have known each other for almost thirty years, and Phil was Kevin’s best man in his wedding. We met each other underneath the world’s largest explosive device. All right, we took some creative license with the last sentence, but it is indeed factually true because we met standing underneath the liquid fuel tanks of the Space Shuttle Columbia at the Kennedy Space Center in 1991. Phil was coordinating the local motorcade support for a visit by then Vice President Dan Quayle to witness a Space Shuttle launch. Kevin was a Secret Service agent assigned to the advance team making security arrangements for the visit.

We never tire of telling people how we met. Neither of us expected that we would meet a lifelong friend at the Space Center because each of us had different roles and expectations that day, but life is funny and doesn’t usually follow an established pattern.

There is a term, edification, that my co-author likes to use for the way one speaker will introduce another speaker during a conference or presentation. It is a way for one speaker to elevate the other and vice versa, rather than having each speaker introduce themselves. Your authors have routinely incorporated it. It seems egotistic and gauche for a speaker to introduce him or herself. So, whenever your authors have spoken jointly before an audience, Kevin has introduced Phil and vice versa.

For this book, we will continue that tradition, so here is Kevin’s introduction of your co-author, Phil Carlson.

Phil Carlson Biography

Phil Carlson was born and raised in Connecticut, where his father worked for Stanley Works. He has been married to the same good woman, Paula, since 1986. He has two sons and two grandkids. He grew up in a typically American, middle-class environment with a caring mother and a hard-working father. He has one sibling, an older sister named Gale, who currently resides in Arizona with her husband Jay. After high school and attending the University of Connecticut, Phil acted on the law enforcement bug that he had since he was a small child.

For ease of discussion, Phil’s career will be highlighted in bullet points.

  • Phil attended and graduated from the Connecticut Municipal Police Training Academy in 1982.
  • Phil immediately went to work at the Cromwell, Connecticut, Police Department (CPD), a small department south of Hartford with about twelve officers, which eventually grew to over twenty. In a department that small, officers become skillful at handling many situations independently, and they quickly become jacks of all trades. During his time at Cromwell PD, Phil worked Patrol Division, was a fatal accident traffic investigator, was assigned to the Detective Division handling investigations from property crimes to sex crimes to homicides. He was a field training officer and instituted the agency’s first Community Relations programs to gather support for the growing department. He was also an instructor and provided in-service training to fellow officers.
  • After seven years at CPD, Phil was recruited by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) on the Space Coast of Florida. During his time at BCSO, Phil was assigned to the Patrol Division, and was later selected for the elite Selective Enforcement Unit/Motorcycle Division, responsible for dignitary escorts, traffic and DUI enforcement, and traffic and crowd control during numerous Space Shuttle launches at the Kennedy Space Center. He was a member of the Mobile Field Force Unit responsible for crowd control.
  • Looking for a larger agency and greater responsibilities and training opportunities, Phil was recruited by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) in Orlando, Florida, where he worked his favorite assignment, Patrol Division. After a short time, he was promoted to deputy sheriff first class and became an agency field training officer. Phil also worked as a school resource officer in one of the county’s largest and toughest high schools. Phil was a certified instructor and taught patrol procedures, arrest techniques, and other patrol-related concepts, and was a member of the mobile field force unit that handled crowd control for the FIFA World Cup in 1994. (A personal note from Kevin: One of the positions where Phil excelled during his tenure at the OCSO was in his role as a field training officer (FTO), where Phil trained dozens of young recruits. Phil found that he loved training new police officers, and in my humble opinion, he was exactly the kind of trainer and role model that young police officers needed.)
  • After the events of 9/11, Phil wanted to do something to help his country, so he took his talents to the world’s largest police academy, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) located in Brunswick, Georgia, in the southeastern corner of that state. During his tenure there, he instructed federal police recruits from over ninety federal law enforcement agencies on many varied subject matters, including but not limited to officer response tactics, patrol procedures, physical fitness, arrest techniques, crowd control, defensive tactics, OC Spray and chemical munitions, intermediate weapons to include baton and Taser, tactics and tactical entries, tactics while flying armed, and CPR/first aid. During his nine years at FLETC, Phil also was promoted to senior instructor responsible for development, delivery, and accreditation of many of these programs. He was the senior instructor over the Law Enforcement Control Tactics Instructor Training Program, the largest control tactics instructor program in the nation.
  • Because of his reputation, Phil was recruited away from FLETC by a large multinational communications and energy company headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, and operating in twenty-six countries. In his role as the company’s global director of corporate security, he oversees all internal investigations, conducts executive protection for the company’s leaders, leads physical security at the headquarters, and manages a dozen other responsibilities.
  • While employed as the security director, Phil also created two successful law enforcement training companies in the private sector, focused on officer safety and survival.

Kevin Rice Biography

Kevin has law enforcement blood coursing through his veins. His father (Kevin’s hero) spent twenty years as an NYPD detective, several years as an investigator for the New York state attorney general, and lastly spent ten years as a deputy sheriff in a rural Florida county. Kevin’s two brothers both had long and successful careers in their own right in local and state law enforcement. With that kind of genetic pedigree, there was no doubt that Kevin would follow in his dad’s footsteps, but Kevin will be the first to say that he wished he was half the...
