This book illustrates lichens that were recently collected in the temperate to subtropical states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. For some species, these are the first colour illustrations published. Parmeliaceae are well represented in this book, depicting some species with very limited distributions. Aptroot 2019.- Thallus varying in size , foliose, rounded or later on often rather irregular in form, in most types adnate to substratum or partly ascendent, deeply or shallowly lobate, usually thick or rather thick (see below), much swollen when moist; light or dark olive-green to brownish or blackish. Usually not isidiate but in some specimens ±richly covered by small or sometimes larger globular isidia (granules) of the same colour as thallus or somewhat darker. Apothecia in varying number Excipulum euthyplectenchyma-tous. Spores 8/ascus, fusiform with acute, more rarely extended end, 4-celled, (15-)17-26 x (5-)6.5-8.5 µm.

Aptroot 2015. - Basidiomycete. Basidiospores tin walled, colourless. Cyano-bacterial trichomes 5-10 µm wide, hyphal sheath formed by irregular hyphae composed of cylindrical, often curved cells, leaving inter-spaces, or hyphal sheath indistinct; thallus filaments densely woven and leaving small or no interspaces; prothallus smooth and shiny or absent.
