This book is a specialized monograph that systematically integrates the phenomena and control strategies of protein solutions accumulated through the author’s long-term research and educational activities, covering the necessary foundations through practical applications with a clear emphasis on real-world utility. It addresses a wide range of topics from a unified perspective, including fundamental definitions of protein solutions, physicochemical properties of solution states, mechanisms of additive action, spectroscopic and thermodynamic measurement methodologies, and higher-order structural phenomena such as enzyme activation and liquid–liquid phase separation. These areas of knowledge have traditionally been scattered across individual research articles and isolated textbook chapters, yet they are directly relevant to diverse applications ranging from everyday food processing to biopharmaceutical formulation design and the understanding of intracellular biological phenomena. Although the discussion is grounded in original research literature, advanced theoretical frameworks such as statistical mechanics, biophysics, protein folding theory, and polymer chemistry are intentionally simplified, with primary emphasis placed on how these concepts can be used in practice and how they contribute to solving real experimental and industrial problems.

Kentaro Shiraki is Professor at the Institute of Pure and Applied Sciences, University of Tsukuba, and a pioneer in protein solution science. He received his Ph.D. from Osaka University in 1999 and conducted postdoctoral research on protein stability before serving as Assistant Professor at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST). He joined the University of Tsukuba in 2004 to establish his laboratory and was promoted to Full Professor in 2016. He has also held major academic leadership roles, including serving as a Board Member of The Protein Science Society of Japan. Professor Shiraki has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications on fundamental and applied aspects of protein solution phenomena, including aggregation, viscosity modulation, phase separation, and additive-mediated stabilization. His work bridges molecular biophysics with practical challenges in biopharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and food science, translating fundamental insights into industrial applications through collaborations with more than 20 partners.
