Organic transformations are the heart of synthetic organicchemistry. The Compendium of Organic Synthetic Methods seriesfacilitates the search for the most useful functional grouptransformations in organic chemistry. Compendium of OrganicSynthetic Methods, Volume 9, provides quick access to provenprotocols for the newest, most useful reactions andtransformations. It contains both functional group transformationsand bond-forming reactions, and focuses on the use of reagentsreadily available or easily prepared and handled in thelaboratory.
This valuable desktop resource contains over 1,200 examples ofpublished reactions for the preparation of monofunctional compoundsin a handy reference, as well as over 800 examples of difunctionalcompounds, and features over 30 more reviews than Volume 8. As inall the previous Compendium volumes, the classification schemesused allow for quick and easy reference and information retrieval.Chemical transformations are classified by the reacting functionalgroup of the starting material and then by the functional groupformed. Helpful indices are provided for both monofunctional anddifunctional compounds as an efficient means of guidance tospecific classes of transformations.
Compendium of Organic Synthetic Methods, Volume 9, is anunparalleled source of information on the methods, reactions, andtransformations in contemporary organic chemistry for the workingchemist and student.
Volume 9 in the series originated by I. T. Harrison and S. Harrison

MICHAEL B. SMITH, PhD, is Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Connecticut at Storrs. His research interests focus on developing asymmetric reactions based on manipulating chiral, nonracemic lactams. This work is applied to the development of new synthetic methods and the synthesis of polycyclic alkaloids with antitumor or antiviral activity. Dr. Smith was responsible for developing a new reagent for determining the enantiomeric composition of alcohols and amines bearing a chiral center.
