David B. Speights, Ph.D.
Chief Data Scientist, The Retail Equation (A division of Appriss)
Dr. David Speights is the chief data scientist for The Retail Equation. He has 20 years of experience developing and deploying analytical solutions for some of the world’s largest companies. Throughout his career, he has managed massive amounts of data using big data tools. Currently, he is responsible for analytical modeling and managing POS data from more than 25 national retailers (equating to more than 100 million rows of new data daily). He has been with The Retail Equation since 2000. Prior to joining the company, Speights was first vice president of Mortgage Credit Risk Modeling at Washington Mutual and chief statistician at HNC Software. He is often asked to consult on projects within a number of industries. Speights holds a Ph.D. in Biostatistics from the University of California, Los Angeles and has several patents.
Daniel M. Downs, Ph.D.
Senior Statistical Criminologist, The Retail Equation (A division of Appriss)
Dr. Downs is a noted professor, presenter, author and researcher. Downs has a vast background in retail loss prevention and criminology. Downs was a research coordinator for the Loss Prevention Research Council (LPRC) where he gathered fact-based research to develop loss control solutions to positively affect its members and the retail industry. As an adjunct professor at the University of Florida, Downs taught a course entitled Crime Prevention: Field Research and assisted in other courses related to criminology, law, statistics, research and psychology. He has spent the last 5 years focusing on quantitative research methods and predictive modeling at The Retail Equation. Downs received his Ph.D. in Criminology from the University of Illinois, his M.A. in Experimental Psychology and B.S. in Psychology from California State University, San Bernardino.
Adi Raz, MBA, Doctoral Candidate
Senior Director, Data Sciences and Modeling, The Retail Equation (A division of Appriss)
Adi Raz is the Senior Director of Data Sciences and Modeling at the Retail Equation. Adi has over 15 years of experience developing analytics solutions and modeling for the retail and financial services industries. She has spent the past 12 years at The Retail Equation developing predictive and analytical solutions for over 30 national retailers. Currently, she is responsible for managing the data sciences and modeling team responsible for all active retail models handling more than 12 million transactions a day. Raz is also responsible for analytical research and development and has a long track record of improving predictive models to better drive profitable solutions for retailers. Prior to the Retail Equation, Raz was employed at Circuit City, Washington Mutual Bank, and Countrywide in senior analytics roles developing and deploying predictive solutions. Raz received her Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Statistics from James Madison University and her MBA from Pepperdine University, graduating first in her class from both programs. She is currently a Business Administration Doctoral candidate.
