Er wurde Beamter in der Justizverwaltung und arbeitete gleichzeitig als Journalist und Theaterkritiker und begann seine schriftstellerische Tätigkeit. Er wurde hauptsächlich durch seinen Roman Dracula bekannt – ein Erfolg, den Stoker jedoch nicht mehr erlebte.
