Jahrhundertelang führten biblische Prologe die Leser in die Themen und Probleme der lateinischen Bibel ein. Das Profil des Paulus ist zweifellos von dieser Gattung geprägt worden: Paulus der neue Mose, Paulus der Theologe, Paulus der Vermittler zwischen Juden und Nichtjuden. Trotz guter kritischer Editionen sind die Texte und historischen Situationen dieser Prologe noch immer nicht wissenschaftlich erforscht. Die vorliegende Monographie untersucht eine solche Einleitung, die als benediktinischer Prolog bekannt ist und wegen ihrer Beziehung zum Muratorischen Fragment anerkannt, aber von allen Verzeichnissen biblischer Paratexte ausgeschlossen wurde. Angeregt durch einen neuen Manuskriptfund, behandeln Jeremy C. Thompson und Clare K. Rothschild den Prolog als eigenständigen Text mit einer neuen Ausgabe und einem Kommentar, der alle bekannten Quellen und Parallelen berücksichtigt. Letztlich regen sie an, diesen seltenen Text in die Buchpraxis, die theologische Polemik und den intellektuellen Austausch zwischen griechischen und lateinischen Schriftstellern des frühen fünften Jahrhunderts und darüber hinaus einzubetten.
