This book provides readers with a broad overview of integrated circuits, also generally referred to as micro-electronics. The presentation is designed to be accessible to a broad audience, including readers with limited, technical knowledge. Its coverage includes key aspects of integrated circuit design, implementation, fabrication, and applications,  reaching even beyond the 2nm process node. The author complements his discussions with a large number of diagrams and photographs, in order to reinforce the explanations. The book is divided into two parts, the first of which is specifically developed for people with almost no or little technical knowledge. It presents an overview of the electronic evolution and discusses the similarity between a chip floor plan and a city plan, using metaphors to help explain concepts. It includes a summary of the chip development cycle, some basic definitions and a variety of applications that use integrated circuits. The second part digs deeper into the details and is perfectly suited for professionals working in one of the semiconductor disciplines who want to broaden their semiconductor horizon. As we see increasing co-integration of ICs, sensors, and actuators, this part includes a section called . It discusses micro- and nanosystems, such as micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems, microchemical systems, and microbiological systems, as well as sensors and actuators.

The book includes a comprehensive index with numerous semiconductor-related abbreviations and keywords, enabling readers to quickly locate the relevant material within the text.

Harry J.M. Veendrick joined Philips Research Laboratories in 1977, where he has been involved in the design of memories, gate arrays and complex video-signal processors. His principal research interests include the design of low-power and high-speed complex digital ICs, with an emphasis on nanometre-scale physical effects and scaling aspects. Complementary to this is his interest in IC technology.

In 2002 he received a PhD in electronic engineering from the Technical University of Eindhoven, the Netherlands. He was a Research Fellow at Philips Research Labs and NXP Research and has been a Visiting Professor to the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering of the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, UK.

In 2006 he continued his research at NXP, which is the 2006 spin-off of the disentangled former Philips Semiconductors Product and R&D Departments. In May 2009, he left NXP Research and launched his own training activity, offering 1-day, 3-day, and 5-day courses for diverse target audiences, with course materials—including the course books—being continuously updated.

He (co-)authors many patents and publications on robust, high-performance and low-power CMOS IC design and has contributed to many conferences and workshops, as reviewer, speaker, invited speaker, panellist, organizer, guest editor and programme committee member. In addition, next to this Bits on Chips book, he is the author of MOS ICs (VCH 1992), Deep-Submicron CMOS ICs (Kluwer Academic Publishers: 1 edition 1998 and 2 edition 2000) and Nanometer CMOS ICs 1  edition 2008, 2   edition 2013 and 3   edition 2024. He is a co-author of Low-Power Electronics Design (CRC Press, 2004).
