As tissue engineering, real-time biosensors, and lab-on-a-chip applications for monitoring and modeling become more widespread, it is important to provide a concise overview of theoretical and practical foundations of this field. This book presents readers with a better understanding of the underlying scientific principles in the areas of tissue engineering, biosensors, and implants. By focusing on the specific interaction of cells with these various interfaces, it is possible to highlight current developments as well as their practical and clinical applications.

Nihal Engin Vrana is Director of Fundamental Research in Protip SAS, a French company specializing in titanium implants, the field of which recently reported the first successful implantation of an artificial larynx in humans. His research interests encompass macroporous titanium structures, tissue engineering, cell-biomaterial interactions, cryostorage, and process optimization. He has published twenty-four journal articles, three book chapters, and was granted two international patents. Currently, Dr. Vrana is coordinating two multinational European Union projects that are focused on in vivo biosensors and immune response to implants (www.immodgel.org) respectively. Dr. Vrana obtained his BSc in Biology and MSc in Biotechnology at Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, and his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Dublin City University, Dublin, Ireland, as a Marie Curie fellow.
